I'm with OP, and really don't get why so much criticism.

DDG does use Bing proprietary search algorithm, which I really don't like. And their revenue also comes from serving MS ads.

For me, DDG SERPs are mediocre for the most part. Would definitely welcome if they did something more than just keeping user privacy.

They market themselves well, that's for sure. You guys all seem to love it.

I do know people who refuse to give google more power and only search using duckduckgo. For me, the search quality isn't there, especially if you are looking for info on more esoteric topics. I do see some hits from ddg in my stats which i find encouragin personally. We have all hoped for some competition in the search market. So i don't see where the hate is coming from.

Anyone else remember "Scroogle"? Similar to StartPage and DDG, it ran your search for you and scraped the results, then retransmitted them to you. I like SP and DDG over Google and have them as my goto search. I haven't had any issues. These Google proxy searchers won't help you if Google is manipulating the results to hide sites that don't fit Google's agenda.

Privacy Badger, Ghostery, Adblock and NoScript are great tools to help improve privacy and block Google Analytics and Facebook Pixels and Amazon tracking to give you a better level of privacy.
