I am paying monthly for a VPS but I am thinking of switching over for the free VPS but I read some threads about people getting charged for their AWS without even knowing. How does that happen?
OP maybe you can try MoneyPolo. It's a phone app and you can get a VCC with a $1 balance but I'm not sure how it works with AWS. I know it works fine for netflix so maybe it's worth a try.

Wrong, VCC still Work with AWS, I have created many AWS account using VCC
You just need balance on $1 on VCC
But sometimes aws blocked account because cheap VCC provider.
