With Amazon and google VPS use your real credit card, cuz vcc won't work with them, they give free service, so basically it's free.

well, VCCs are not worth signing up with when it comes to AWS. Coz even you accounts are approved. Its not giving you any usable limits in EC2, So its useless basically.
and there are many more factors to that too

I am paying monthly for a VPS but I am thinking of switching over for the free VPS but I read some threads about people getting charged for their AWS without even knowing. How does that happen?

OP maybe you can try MoneyPolo. It's a phone app and you can get a VCC with a $1 balance but I'm not sure how it works with AWS. I know it works fine for netflix so maybe it's worth a try.

You just need balance on $1 on VCC

Free VCC not gonna work with AWS because you will need to be charge $1 for the service and free VCC can not provide you card with balance
