What is there to explain? :) Content is indexed, it has age and that works as a massive SEO factor. Content gets deindexed, it has no age.

OP when you take in consideration someones opinion on this or other topic, see what services they are selling. Search google, there is some recent case studies available on this.

@Nargil what about expired domains that when I look in Wayback machine that has been redirected are they still ok to use?

Check where they were redirected. If it's legit, then yes, that's fine.
 
Ok so a relating site is fine, but a sex site or something dodgy then avoid. gotcha :)

Surely common sense would answer this.
If your site is about space travel and it redirects to something to do with space or travel, it looks fine.

However if it redircts to porn, viagra or Chinese/Japanese spam, then run a mile and don't buy it.
 
Like any other links they do work. With the difference that these are (if domain has god metricks) more powerfull that lets say web 2.0 links.
 
Oh yes! I can vouch for this. But you will need to filter the domains according to metrics. I personally sort them according to TF (Majestic), then Moz PA/DA, then Ahrefs. TF and Ahrefs used to be free, but now it looks like you'll need to pay a little money to get those metrics. Moz is still free, provided if you have an API.
 
Yes it still works. Just always check its backlink profile from spam plus consider decent metrics. That's the basic.
