Have the idea that EMD's do better in local Google versions where the updates roll out later.

As far as I know DEM (Domain Exact Match - btw it should be DEM not EMD, well doesn't really matter) is still important but not the most important thing.
However, Google likes to do a lot of changes. I believe soon they will change it to non-relevant.

When it comes to ranking and calculating your opponents, you still should take DEM in the count.

I think Matt Cutts seemed to bew saying that its LOW QUALITY emd that they tried to hit last time.This would imply "high quality" emd is ok.
