Yes it still has an effect it seems. I have about a month old, word press EMD that is on page 90 at the moment after building 2 web 2.0 sites for a 15k keyword. will keep you updated!

It's not about the EDM but rather the quality and expertise of the link builder..:)

It´s not doing anything bad your rankings if you have good content in your site.

In short - yes BUT I think G realized that many "MFA" sites are using long tail exact match domains to gain advantage in rankings and hence nowadays it not too important to have your main keyword in domain. Basically, you can pick up domain that sounds and looks appealing to visitors and tailor/bend it to whatever niche you want.

Content is still a king and defines your site.

Just a piece of advice - if you are planning to start a new site, consider one thing before buying domain containing keywords - how will it look in search results? Will it be appealing? Will it cause surfers to click on it? I think that in many cases something original and funny like fatstevefinance.com will look way more interesting than finance-advice-in-yourcityhere.com in SERPS and will have way better CTR... Surfers are getting smarter and I think they "recognize" "MFA" type sites.

    Just my $0.02 :)

For me it still wortks as long as it has content on it. Im trying to rank two website atm, one is non edm, built 30 manual non spun content web 2.0, tons good backlings, high pr guest posts etc, and it doesnt pass second page, the emd site just with a social post blast from senuke hit second page. Both are 100k exact searches.

Before the EMD update, site tend to take second page even firstpage without a single backling, just with content, today it needs more content and good backlinks, but it seems to be easier than non emd.

You said that it's not important to have an EMD anymore and I think most people will agree. How about having your keyword as a path name? For example, let's assume I try to rank for kw "dog food" and create a page under animalplanet.com/dogfood. Will I gain any benefit compared to just ranking the root domain animalplanet.com for "dog food"?

I would really like to hear opinions from more experienced SEO guys with this issue.

definitely YES. /dog-food/ is one of the keys! Though, if it will look more natural like /GMO-free-dog-food/ I would post it like that. and would build links according to the plan/article/keywords.

Great! One more question: I've built most of my links directly to my root domain which is not EMD and it seems to be ranking pretty well with a competitive keyword. Would it be a solid plan to create that /mykeyword/ page and just 301 it back to root index.html, then continue link building campaign to that /mykeyword/ page?

Why???? if you create your domain.com/dog-food/ pages - why do you want to redirect them to domain root???????

If they have unique "dog food" content, you should instead put links on domain root to those pages and not the other way around...

Whats the plan? It starts to sound fishy or I'm just not getting something?

    Nothing fishy here :D
The thing is I've already built my site on root domain without thinking too much about having my exact keyword in domain/path name. Because of that it would be too much hassle to transfer my keyword targeted content from root to /keywordpath/. Maybe I just leave it as it is and pay more attention on this issue on my next project. :)

Ugh, 301 will work just fine then, keep in mind to add alll 404 to list as well so you end up with everything redirected straight to domain root.

a few lines in .htaccess should do it.

It ranks just as good as before... The only difference now is that you have to get a bit more links and content just to start ranking

It does still work, I don't think there's any doubt about that. Put it this way, it's better to have it than not. What has happened is that I think it's impact has been softened and so you won't get as big a boost from that alone as you used to. With that said, EMD plus relevant content plus good backlinks plus regular updates is a pretty good formula. The more SEO you throw at it, the more will stick as long as you're clever in how you do it and don't black-hat it.

Yes, i have some EMDs ranking just fine.. What i noticed is that newly regged domains post Penguin do good.. while the ones slapped by Peng are almost impossible to get ranked again..

EMDs are ranking fine and fast for easy-mid competition keywords (my own experience) but you should not believe us and get a few EMDs and test for yourself.

Absolutely... Quality content is what it all matters now..

So EMD or DME all ranks with good content... DME is nothing just opposite of EMD
