Does compression deteriorates the file quality?

Hi, I am having two issues on this:

1) I wanted to archive some of the audio files and each file is about 5-6 mb and the total size of all the audio files is 160 GB. So, I tried to archive the folder using 7-zip and 160 GB came out to be 2 GB? Weird.

2) Suppose there are a bunch of folders and the total size is around 50 GB. And all those folders are inside the main folder. If I right click on the main folder, it shows like 5-6 GB and if I go inside the folder and select all those individual folders together, I get the correct file size. Why is that?

So, does archiving reduces the internal file quality in any way? And what compression level should I select?

I wouldn't think it could reduce the quality otherwise files wouldn't be safe after compression.

Plenty of software is distributed in zip or rar files and they continue to work regardless.
 
Compressing 160 gigs of audio into 2 is a big deal. Are you sure all the audio files are not broken/corrupted?
 
Rar and 7zip are safe. You will have the exact same file after. Was it 160gb of wav or MP3?

That doesn't answer my question. The size shows 160 GB. But have you individually checked if the files are running fine or not?

All are okay and upon further checking, when I'm selecting all the individual audio files, the total size comes to around 2 GB only. But if I select the main folder that have all those files and see the properties, I'm getting 160 GB. Weird.

Do you know why that's happening? Selecting all the individual files together gives the correct size but if I select the main folder, I am getting 160 gb.

This means there are more hidden files inside the folder. Make them 'show hidden files' by watching a YT video and you'd be able to spot the files. Then you decide what to do with those files.

You can simply move those audio files to a new folder and compress them there.

Hmm yes, there are a couple of junk files.
