Content or Links? Where you Will Invest More?

It's like Air and Water. You can't live without either. However, you can go longer without water (links), but you won't last more than few minutes without air (content). You can get away with minimal link building if you go after easier keywords and use topical clusters (this will help all your keywords rank). Build HQ links to your home page, and to your articles targeting the more difficult keywords.

2 great answers here, so just to add, don't scrimp on either if you have a real project / site. Poor content will not be good for the reader and crappy toxic links will harm your site.

I have seen people ask me to look at their site and they have amazing content, but the reason they are not ranking higher is poor backlinks, screwed up anchors and poor onpage/ UX.
Alternate to this is people have asked me to get them onto Forbes and you look at their site and it's a thin content site, the written content might have well been spun, the quality is that bad. And you have to decline taking this site on to work with.
 
to be honest depends how good the content is, to me i dont see a limit. what if you end up like mr beast
pretty sure he never bought a backlink in his life.
depends on the niche and keywords too
some niches dont need any type of backlinks just self promotion.
one or two backlinks fall in naturally

Content is king. I've seen lots of people ranking with loads of high quality articles with low comp key words and virtually no link built at all.
 
First to impress the audience is Effective high quality relevant content.
And also to provide more power to those sites is links. Without any one, nothing happens.
Both are more important
 
Having high quality articles and relevancy could get you expected results with low competition keywords. When you the articles loaded you can spend less on links even the links are focused on content.

I'm yet to see a site that ranks with only links.

The essence of links is to push your content forward.

I think that should answer your question.
 
If you want to get the real benefit of ranking (in a slightly quicker time) I would say 60% backlinks and 40% content.

I have seen shit ranking on google and when I check out their backlink profile, I see a lot of PBN footprints.

Of course, one of the other indicators for a crappy website to rank is the hidden PBNs that may not be visible in popular tools but again, it is a backlink that ranked (a crappy website) over the content.

On the other hand, if you want a slow poison and want to run a marathon, content over backlinks provided your KW reasearch is top notch mate!

TLDR:
Running a sprint? Backlinks over content
Running a Marathon? Content over backlinks
 
Backlinks are important and do help you rank, but content works across all channels from PPC to SEO, media coverage, and referral traffic. Good content can also lead to backlinks.
 
Backlink are act like signals, signal for what? As An answer for the audience is looking for....so the question itself doesn't makes sense
 
I'd split it between kw research, content, and links
It's hard to go all in on one aspect and expect to rank well in a couple of months
 
If I HAD to choose, I would choose to buy links over content. I can create my own content, but I also create my own links as well.

But, it's more difficult to rank without links, so that's the road I'd take. Write the content, buy the links.
