One way of doing research is to contact different business and ask them what pain points they face in there daily routine and see if you can solve the issues for them and in return get paid.

As you mentioned there is a ton of e-commerce sites, digital marketing freelancers and much more. So if you don't bring anything new to the marketplace in that particular filed it might be challenging to build a repeatable, scalable and profitable growth machine, something most of us is striving to do.
