In the past I have mainly just blasted the hell out of the root domain (home page).

Is it good practice in building back links to diversify this a little? For instance.

index.html 10,000 back links
about.html 1,000 back links
contact.html 500 back links

Otherwise Google might think, hey this site has 10,000 links to homepage but no one is linking to any other page on there website... something up here.

What do you think/do?

Well I would not backlink your about and contact pages but I would backlink any other pages you have. If those are the only three page you have on your site I guess a few thrown at them will not hurt but I have never backlinked those types of pages myself.

I understand they may not be meaningful but more to look more natural back links to Google for your website as a whole.

Backlinks to your contact and about pages generally are not normal looking but backlinking your innerpages in general is what you want to do as that always looks natural.

I typically backlink my innerpages significantly more than my main page when building a site.

Building backlinks to internal pages is always a smart move as it helps build domain authority over time, although I would suggest creating a few sub-pages that are related to your main topic (whether its semantically relevant terms, or something directly related to you main keyword target but just slightly different) This practice can help raise your ranking for any keywords and long tails based around your main keyword and if you have proper internal linking can help push some PR back up to the main homepage.

I am not sure how natural looking building links to your contact page looks. Honestly have you ever even thought about linking to a websites contact page? I never have. Other inner pages with content yes that is a good idea.

its always a good idea to deeplink/build backlinks to inner pages as well, and forget what google might think, you think about it yourself, if you are targetting several keywords in your inner pages wouldn't you wanna rank for those keywords?? and in order to do that you need more backlinks...
