Big changes in Google content scoring

Cheers mate.
Lets see what we all SEO ppl can do.
There is so much competition !!
Its hard to please Google. :P

Kind of weird that there is no h2

Not weird to me... tags move up and down and in and out all the time. Title doesn't move much. H3 doesn't move much. H1 is almost always lower ranking than H3... My question is why are these tags fairly static and the other tags are so dramatically fluid from week to week.

Title and H1 are the really weird ones.

Title and H1 are the really weird ones.

It might be because they are manipulated the most out of all the tags. I mean, most people for many years have known about the title tag and the H1. I can recall some years back how it became an epidemic almost where people were stuffing H1 tags in pages everywhere to rank. :)

There isn't as much use or other tags in that manner.

Did you find any "faster" way to get into DMOZ listing ?
I've seen services floating around that offer affiliate commission for Dmoz "gold" editors listing sites, and charge $300 for a listing. I wouldn't do that for a site that's going to be around for awhile, though.

Hi man,

i don't understand one thing.
In the rankings, it means its better to put text in <p> than <textarea> for seo ?

Mister Gemeni linked to the current results a couple posts before your own. <p> has fallen from the top tags.

As far as I can tell the value is Huge... the cool thing is that you don't have to link to other sites... Just link to other relevant pages on your own site... They appear to have about the same influence. Just make sure the pages you link to are each tuned well for a single search term you want to rank for and do it a number of times with unique content.

Perhaps this is a reason for why the linkwheel technique took off. Each of those pages linked to other highly tuned websites. Thoughts?

Thanks for sharing... can I ask what arena you play in? Adsense, affiliate, retail, etc...?

Apologies - I missed your reply.

In this example it is for a monthly subscription service for sports training videos. My downward tick wasn't huge, though.

Does somebody can guarantee inclusion in the Dmoz? I m willing to pay for it.

This is extremely interesting.

I would love information on how to set one of these badboys up...

:)

I dont quite understand why these really obscure tags get rewarded by google. As a web developer, I havent even heard of some of these tags. if they are almost never used by most websites, why would google reward people that do?

This is a fascinating thread. Thanks to the OP!!

Primary Source is me.

I deploy the knowledge on the $20M/year retail website I work for. ;)

Thanx Bro, please will you complete this sentence...does this website solely rely on SEO or more like PPC for traffic?

ipopbb you mentioned the outgoing links as a factor. You said linking to topical relevant sites. And you said you can link to pages on your own site.

Now my question is if you want to link to other sites you dont own that are relevant to this topic how to avoid to give these sites too much rankingpower.
I mean if you link them with your keyword you would support a competing site.

Is such a link of less value for you when you use another anchor or is the anchor-relevance very important?

Can you make these links nofollow or will this lead to the point that the links are of now value to yourself too? Probably its the case isnt it?

And when you cant use nofollow and you have to use a relevant or the same keyword your page is optimized for is there a break-even when the outgoing links are more worth for you than the ingoing links to your competitors?
For example one link on your page to your competitor maybe gives them a higher bost than you get from that link. But maybe at 5 links or another number you have the bigger advantage from it? When you spread the linkjuice to 5 of your competitors? So that they get 1/5 of the linkjuice but your gain in serps for linking to them is higher then their boost.
Is there such a break-even-number?

Darn it... :( Now I have to explain some stuff and people are going to get mad and argue with me.

This is all UNPROVEN to the community at large... Parts of it are PROVEN to me, but 2/3 others who have tried to reproduce my results have failed to do so for whatever reasons. I only know the details of my own work so that is all I can speak to.

Statistical learning explains it pretty well, but its just a guess. Imagine you are google and you have a database of 2 million web spam sites that have been reported to google by webmasters who were policing their keywords. Wouldn't you want to run some stats on the spam sites and see how they differ from top 10 results in general for their keywords they target? Ultimately you end up with something essentially representing a relative likelihood of a tag to be used in a spammy way. The leaders would be deprecated and obscure tags that nobody uses. Thats why I say it doesn't matter which tag is #1 I just matters that if you have a spammy site and want to try to beat the auto-classification then you might consider higher ranking, but still appropriate usage tags. Prior to Caffeine/Mayday this tuning trick made my clients about $3M US... It doesn't appear to matter as much anymore since Google's algorithm is soo different and only has 4 significant factors

1. domain match
2. dmoz & yahoo links
3. keyword density (if you don't have 50+ keyword matches per page (full source... check it out... even HTML comments help now) ... )
4. page rank (Its back in a big way... It looks shaky because it is a secondary sort but it pumps traffic from google... A new twist on it is that if you want to maintain High PR you need to link to page... PR has been tweaked to favor home pages and index pages, another totally exploitable pattern)

and I'd say the unofficial factors that help those 4 work efficiently are

A. site structure

home pages need to directly link to pages of importance, anything more than 1 click removed get 0 link juice... that's why long tail vanished for online retailers... home pages linked to category pages linked to product pages... product pages fell out of the serps... retailer loses %25 revenue from Google... sound familiar? Took me a month of research to prove it to myself with my logs and analytics.)

B. web site age

Not domain age.... Google uses "Date First Indexed" not whois... why would they rely on an externally controlled factor when they have a better and more appropriate analog in their own system. There is a reason they don't share "Date First Indexed" ever... WayBack Machine is better tool than whois for website age and will probably save you and others from being scammed for worthless old domains that have never been websites.

C. fresh content

Newness counts a lot now.

D. Media file links and Microformats

Those star reviews in the SERPs come from your content!

E. Legitimacy Pages

Contact Page, About Us page, Press Page, Privacy Policy, Security Page, Management Page, Robots.txt, favicon, apple-touch-icon, Phone number, physical address, etc...

F. Fiduciary Duty Factors
AdWords Spends & Google Checkout & partnership contracts ... they have a legal requirement to their shareholders to do this, and IF they don't their requirement is to continually revisit this notion in other ways. Obviously, they are in the business of making money. Content isn't king. Money is.

The unofficial factors don't get you to the top... they help you stay there and be competitive.

Very good info about the "keyword matches"

For example, if i was promoting "Wheels":

Would it be beneficial to rename all images on my page that is targeting the term "wheels" to wheels-1.jpg , wheels-2.jpg,etc? Or even make blank images(that match the bg), named follow the same naming scheme. And would google penalize my site for excessive use of this method?

Both... and more... have to diversify traffic channels...

I use:

Email Lists (5 person email team)
PPC (~$1M/yr spend in past years)
PR (1 full time industry standard PR person)
Ton of Social (5 person social team)
Ton of SEO (Me)
