Lot's of content, lot's of external websites linking to your main site (whether web2.0's or a network of your own sites) and a ton of links pointing to the sites that point at your main site, is a pretty good start.

Depends on what your project is, but you should follow only one way, and so the natural link working in project like MyBlogU, search for social connection etc.. or you can mix them with your own PBN that gives you a more steady and effective grows if you do a good keywords research. However, with your PBN you risk future penalization.

Software= Wasting $$$ for nothing

Don't trust software for building backlinks, they are worthless, it is better to use manual link building, btw the good methods are building web2.0 and Quality backlink building from niche related high quality sites
