Not sure if common sense, but I came up with this method and I thought I'd share it.
I'm sure most of you have old accounts on forums that you don't visit much anymore.
Posting links and advertising is usually not allowed on forums, but what you can do is edit your old posts.
Let say you have an account on a forum where you posted something months or years ago.
If the forum CMS allows you to, you can edit an old post and insert a backlink there. No one is ever going to notice.
I have accounts on dozens of forums, some of which I haven't visited in 5 or even 10 years, and just put my links in most of them.
So, go to your main email inbox, search for "forum", find all the forums you used through the years and go to each of them.
You can even use this method on Reddit by editing an old post or comment.
Or you can join a forum now, post something or reply to someone, and then edit the post a few months from now.
Please note that not all forums allow to edit old posts, for example, this is impossible to do on BHW (but I obviously wouldn't do it even if it was).

forum links are generally bad

no they aren't. they have internal link flow and you can make a contextual article style link. very good imo

If its active thread like this one, you just wait till the new page of the thread is about to be started, post and edit your post like 5 minutes after that, while is still active options. Mods rarely check all the posts. The problem is, I always want unedited posts with links. I mean its pretty simple for Google to dismiss any links from edited comments as they are probably added later.. paranoia much? Maybe. Still I prefer to have it this way.

Yes of course that’s one of the best things about forum links, but most of the old posts barely get views hence why this method works.

Old articles are naturally updated all the time. Forum posts not so much, especially not all of posts with your link. Like I said maybe is way too much paranoia, but still better safe than sorry.

Seems quite legit your method !! I had a (soccer team) forum before and I can confirm that you are able to edit your comment on phpBB, without any restriction or even us (moderators and admins) we notice it.

Some of you guys are hung up on backlinks.

Why not getting double the benefits by making it into a parasite?

Make a huge mega post with optimized headers and text. People on the forum will come in with overwhelming positive comments for helping them out with good information.

These positive comments give you social trust for later when you rank this parasite.

The next step is to let it sit for a bit, wait for it to index, and then start sending backlinks at it.

Once the post stops getting comments, make your edits so it's a sales pitch for your product. Once you start ranking, those Google users will click onto the thread and be sold by your copy and positive comments from other third party members.
