Does high karma still matter on Reddit today ?

yeah karma still matters quite a bit on reddit.having more karma can open up more subreddit participation and also make the account look more established other user

You are right; I observed that as well. Reddit's algorithm strictly prioritizes the velocity of early upvotes and subreddit relevance over account age or total karma.

This is a huge shift that a lot of old-school marketers miss. Reddit has aggressively tuned its algorithm to mimic TikTok and Instagram Reels in terms of rewarding immediate content relevance.
If a brand new account posts something that perfectly matches the sub's current sentiment and provokes a massive comment thread, the algorithm pushes it straight to the top of the "Hot" feed. High karma is only useful for ensuring your post doesn't get instantly deleted the second you hit submit. Focus on writing elite hooks and posting during peak subreddit hours!
 
Karma reflects the value of the content you have posted on Reddit. That’s why karma is always valuable, it helps establish your account’s credibility and makes it easier to participate in and post in larger communities.
