The internet is the best record label.

I'm a relatively unknown artist based out of Los Angeles. I've been making music seriously for 10 years, and been scouted by every major record label, but haven't signed. I've never gotten a great offer, but what i have seen is many unsigned artists build structures that resemble a new age record label and succeed.

I've wanted that for myself.

I've just finished my 3rd and best solo work, and went into Def Jam to play it, and it was almost sad. What has been one of the premier music labels of my generation had more seats than they had employees. Cubicles were empty, and i realized that they haven't grown out of the business models they have been living in. They haven't ages well in this internet age. Then i had a great revelation.

The internet has been the best music label since its inception, and every major artist, signed or unsigned, has had a great relationship with their core audience and more, via the internet.

I'm not completely sure how to move forward, but i'd love to build with the incredible internet savvy people on this website.

I'm looking to build more of a campaign that utilized the internet, than to just buy some facebook add space or something. (although that could/should be apart of it.)

what i will say is that i agree that labels can do some things that just an artist cant, but living in los angeles, and making quality music, i've worked with some really incredible people, so even if i don't have the resources, i can still reach them. I realize that the internet is one thing that i haven't done as well as i think exists.

I am a long time out of LA. Last I was there was about 1982. When I was there, Tower Records was on Vine just off of Hollywood Blvd.

Going serious, the post was not really in jest. With modeling technology where it is, the need for a good sound engineer is reduced. Do bear in mind that I can definitely hear a difference between playing a SIM through my computer and playing through an amp. Simply put, the harmonics are different. However, a fast computer with 16GB of memory reduces the harmonic difference. Since my last heart attack, about two years ago, I have not picked up a guitar. When you are creating, the difference in sound is not something that you would be concerned with until you are far along in the process. With Guitar Pro, you may take it anyway you want. I used the program to improve my timing and speed. The software also have the advantage of not getting you kicked out of your apartment or having the neighbors call the cops at two in the morning. I gave away my 200 watt amp, and my 70 watt amp has been in storage for five years. Here at home, when I use an amp, it is a highly modified (tone stack and amplification) Vox AC4TV10 with an Eminence Ragin Cajun 10" speaker. Even that small amp is capable of drowning the apartments around me. Sims avoid this problem.

In LA, the better sound engineers probably do not work for the labels now. The software is just too good and computers allow for control that is hard to duplicate in a studio.

That being said, a label can get you the exposure that would be difficult for an Indy to garnish. Labels are also able to cover transportation expenses more easily than an independent artist can. In the end, it is you that must make a choice. A label requires selling your soul to the label, and the label dictates the music you play. Even with connections, it can be hard to obtain any exposure on the internet, and only a few bands have been successful at it.
