I bought a domain and have since opted to go full throttle at a different idea. Is there any way to switch the domain instead of buying a new domain + hosting for that domain?

Not sure what you mean...

Domain transfer is a term used for moving domain between registrars. Whether between your accounts or to a new owner.

Of course if your new project demands new domain, you need to register/buy this new domain. But you don't need to change hosting. Even if your hoster allows only one domain for your account, you can ask them to change this domain.

You can change all inside the domain, in the same domain and hosting, and even you can transfer it to another domainer, but I think you didnt explain really well what you want

If you are talking from a ranking perspective then it could make things more difficult to rank while the SEs realise that the keywords that the content is targeting has changed but ultimately shouldn't have too big an effect in the long run.

You can use the old domain itself, but if that domain don't suite for your idea, you have to buy a new one; the old one can't be replaced. But for this process it is not necessary to make changes in hosting and all. You can use the same hosting.

Why do you want to change your domain when you can change a lot of things in it instead changing it? You should have a valid reason for it.

My domain was something like automatedsocialmediamarketing.com and I had repurposed it as an espn knockoff to test around. Things were going decently but I imagine they could have been better if the domain name aligned with what was on the site
