I made an app, But...

The idea is to make classroom chat app where students can all connect into same chatroom and chat, but I don't get many downloads.
Any tips how to promote? I cant post the link to app yet, but name is chalkchat - the classroom chat app. Iphone only.

Yeah it's called Facebook group chat..
If you really want it to be used by the students, you need to add something that's not ALREADY on Facebook, something new. Otherwise they can just use Facebook since all their friends are using Facebook; hope you get my point. Good luck!

but most schools block facebook.... and most kids are already over their data limit and try to use wifi

All the kids are using Facebook. Their daddys pay for a data plan I assure you they're not using the school Wifi if it blocks Facebook, because they *are* using FB.

Try promoting the name of the app through facebook fan page and youtube videos

Make a video (animation) explaining the features of your app on youtube and post that video in many fan pages and groups with targeted traffic, you should get many downloads..

Is it all location based? If so, that's kind of cool if you're automatically connected with people within a certain area.

you will need to promote it hard,
1.you could begin with writing to app review websites, there are plenty of them that review apps for their users.
2. optimize the app for the app stores
3. ask your friends to leave review for it. your app should also have the random pop-up that prompts to review the app
4. create a attractive landing page
5. post about the app on edu forms
6. have a budget for paid ads. fb ads are the most effective (app installs)
7. purchase some fake installs just to create a buzz
8. create videos and images for the app that you will load to the app store page and also on YT

Idea sounds good, name of the app is also cool, but best of all the idea will definitely appeal to all investors wanting to be the next tech billionaire, the timing is perfect for this kind of thing. FIND INVESTORS. Meet face to face, sell the idea as the next billion dollar social network. Get a million or more to spend on ads and boom. Easier than you think, at least that's what I hear and what Gary Vaynerchuck claims.

Also, chat needs to have cool stickers/emoticons, like fb, this is huge imo. This will be one of the more costly parts of this idea.

BTW, rumor is facebook is not that cool among the youngsters anymore, the fastest growing demo on fb is 45 y.o ladies. Not that this much to do with op's question.

You can advertise that on Fcebook. Its what hat enough or try native networks... content.ad gravity taboola revcontent mylikes etc. or try reaching out to schools directly.

Nowadays there is a high competition in mobile even if you did good aso your chanches to get in top and seen by users is minimal because your competitors pay money, the majority now buy installs, review, rating and they use also Facebook ads to get installs

So I suggest if you made that app and you want to get ranked the best way is to invest in some paid solutions
