Question on email marketing

I've got a few questions wandering through my mind at the moment, after Penguin I'm starting all over and getting into email marketing so I wanted to know a few things:

1) Importance of email templates, would a good email template increase CTR and/or decrease getting sent to spam?
2) How does the spam filter work in say, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo? This would obviously be referring to me emailing someone I don't know or who hasn't yet subscribed to me, what's a good guide for what to put or leave out in a subject and email content to assure more success in emails not ending up in the spam folder?
3) First email after they insert their email on my landing page will contain the free ebook as promised, should it contain anything else, like a partial article with a [Read More] option, linking them to the website where the full article is, with an optional clickbank ID in the URL?
4) How often should I be sending out automated emails with Aweber / Mailchimp? Once every .... ?
5) What would you consider the most important for keeping these guys as real clients, of course my intention here before starting anything is to provide unique and real value to the potentially future customer, of either one or one of many courses.

My niche is Dating Advice. (Dating Women, Dating Tips, Getting Your Ex Girlfriend Back, Etc).

If anyone is experienced in this and wants to help me out I'm sure I could show some appreciation by either awarding them money for their time or exchange of things they might not have, i.e. targeted emails, or SEO advice / software. I'm quite open to helping anyone that takes the time to help me.

1) In my experience text only is best. It seems to help with making it through the spam filter as well as being more accessible for those with a slower connection. Too many marketers forget that not everyone has high speed.

2) You can check out the "can spam" guidelines. Basically you have to make it blatantly clear that your email is some sort of advertisement and if I remember correctly some company info is also necessary.

3) I like the article idea, but until you know you are making it to their inbox and not the spam folder I would skip the clickbank url.

4) Most agree that the optimum frequency is once a week. That keeps you from being annoying but doesn't give them enough time to forget about you.

5) Customer loyalty. Go above and beyond your competition. Also, don't annoy the hell out of your list with too many emails.

Stick to aweber or icontact etc and they help with spam checking etc. even with layouts.

You should get a good autoresponder sequence. Free 5 day course with useful information transistioning into a full blown product? Jackpot. The longer your autoresponder sequence draws itself out, the better. I've known of marketers who have autoresponders that stretched 2 YEARS. Not 2 Weeks, not 2 Months, 2 Years. Well converting long duration autoresponders can be the last line of defense against encroaching competition. Yeah, I can copy your site in 2 hours, your ads in a day, but how do you copy 2 years worth of autoresponders? Its the ***** part of your funnel.

as far as frequency it really depends on the niche, and pain point of the market. If your helping a dude get back with his ex timing is crucial 1 email a week inst enough

Avoid sending automated emails more often as it is an indication for spamming

I'm so glad someone mentioned Cashvertising. I read that book 2 years ago, one of the best reads I've ever seen.I never heard of Buyology though, I'll have to check that one out

just IMHO

1)use plain text and write good copy. period.
2) autoresponders will rate your email with "spam index" for example adding a tracking pixel to your email will increase it. In first emails try not to send many links. Aweber (getresponse and mailchimp) are inboxing well, but have quite strict rules and can ban you if you complain rate goes too high. In case worried - to prevent complains get your unsub button into upper part of email so instead of marking you as spam people will unsub
3) nope - too much at once, dont bomb your list, build your audience - am not speaking 1 year relationship but put in some followups 1-2 per week, keep them for 1-2 weeks before you release your aff link on them
4) 2 per week max in case you want to have a stable list, in case you have an option to get very cheap leads on high turnover go for 4 - week. I prefer 2 targeted then 4 email "bombing"
5) be real, write what you would like to read yourself

1. Plain text often converts at a higher rate than HTML.

2. A good autoresponder should tell you whether your email is likely to be flagged as spam. There are also online tools that help you modify your copy to avoid spam filters.

3. Upsell, dude. Upsell.

4. Depends on your audience. I used to do every day with decent rules. However, I've scaled down to once every few days to reduce the unsub rate.

5. For KEEPING clients, you've got to maintain constant contact. You can't just sell and forget about them. Constantly be selling and asking for referrals.

Part of it is pretty simple. Send them quality, actionable, value filled emails that give them a satisfied feeling that they even opened your email. It boils down to value at first. Once they see value in opening even one of your emails your chance of conversion when you start embedding offers and upsells in the emails goes up exponentially.

+1 on Aweber as well. Worth considering others though.
