McDonalds cashiers can't count..

I would appreciate you guys not assuming all cashiers are idiots. I worked at Burger King for a good year and yet I run a couple of my own businesses and track my finances accurately. Please reference http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/blackhat-lounge/241776-what-6-6-6-simple-math-question-5.html to see how many of you all can't count. That is all, thank you.

OP - The girl must have been new and probably working a cash register for the first time. She might have been confused by the fact that you gave her more than the total (since you were paying with change), and then automatically assumed that you were short. The mistake could have been caused more out of anxiety than anything else......

You really can't blame them lol, they get paid like 8 bucks an hour, they won't get anything more even if they are the best cashiers in the world

First of, the OP is and ass for paying for $3 worth of food with pocket change. Restaurants are extremely busy environments, especially McDonalds. Even if the girl was decent at math, she coulda easily messed up due to pressure or just being in a hurry. I've worked in a restaurant before and have a high aptitude for math and I've still messed up counting change several times from assholes that decide to pay with a bag of loose change.

And as for McDonald's workers being dumb, I have a friend that actually has worked for years at a restaurant for $7.25/hour (minimum wage; worse pay than McDonald's) and he has a 160 IQ...I don't know how accurate that is, but he IS very smart. It's a matter of ambition.

Edit: After rereading the OP, 2-3 minutes is way to long to count $3 in change unless it's mostly pennies or something. Still, unless it's mostly quarters, you're still an ass for paying with change.

I have several of the largest fast food corps around my area. 1/4mile in all directions. McDonalds,Wendys,Tacobell,KFC, Pollo Tropical, Dunkin Donuts

There was a point in my life when I was working construction, going to school, running my business, and literally depended on these institutions for my Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Coincidentally that was when my cholesterol was the highest. Any way, I would see the same people everyday and got to know them.
1. You can never ever ever ever judge someone. Some of the people who work there go to school, support there children, and work another job on the side.
2. You have no idea how stressful the environment is in those places (coworkers/customers/management/ above conditions)
3. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. I can't believe you people are bashing employees that work there without knowing them personally.

Granted, the op reference to the employee not caring is shameful on her part.

But the rest of you with you're broad generalizations and inaccuracies , show the real ugly side of yourselves. Stop that SHI%

I'm not bashing the people personally. I'm bashing the piss-poor attitude you get with some of them, not all of them.

I realize that the job may be the only one they can get, and I realize the job and the working conditions may not be the best in the world.

But that does NOT give them the right to take it out on me, the paying customer.

If the job sucks that badly, then quit. Your sanity is worth more than a crappy minimum-wage job. But if it is the best that you can get, then you had better do the best you can do at that job, suck it up, and be thankful that you have it, instead of being an ass to the people who supply the money to pay your wages.

Exactly I was in a very similar situation when I first moved out from living with my parents I ate fast food EVERY DAY and got to see a lot of the regular employees there and got to know them on a very basic level. One time I saw a grown man yelling at a 14 year old kid working the register for taking too long. I felt sick.

My recommendation to some of the people here is to go in and order your meal and sit at a table with a view of the whole operation. Do it during Lunch time. Watch every persons job. Watch how organized they have to be and watch how fast they get peoples food to them. Watch how people come in and order 13 Cheeseburgers and 13 Large Fries and 13 Drinks and get upset that the burgers weren't all made special order properly. This happens all the time and it shouldn't.

It is disrespectful to walk up to a McDonalds counter and special order more than 2-3 items in a go. It is disrespectful to the employees and the other customers. Also watch how much free food McDonalds has to give away because of people complaining about the SMALLEST things. If you sit back and watch them for a few days in a row, I think anyone will get new respect for them.

I have never worked in Fast Food because I personally couldn't handle it. Its WAY too difficult for me and I am not lazy or dumb.

The counter is one thing, but it used to piss me off when people got a shitload of food for their kids, their friends, long lost cousins, and who knows who else in the DRIVE THRU and they get all pissed when we ask them to park around front, because their order will take some time, because "they have a right to be in the drive-thru." We even offer to walk it out to them, usually requiring more than one person because of all the food, but they like to stay put like they own the place and losing their order will make us go out of business. It amazes me.

For those of you who don't know, drive-thru orders have to be out in 2 minutes and 30 seconds flat, from order taking, to paying, to prepping. Preferably faster.

Why are you as the paying customer entitled to anything more than the product which you are paying for? When you go to a fast food establishment, you are paying for the product, with the assumption it will be delivered promptly. If you have somehow been given the notion that ass licking is part of what you are paying for, I think I should put an end to that immediately. There is no mark-up in Fast Food for Customer Service. Its bare bones.

You do realize that if they quit that job and went on welfare that your taxes would go up right? So don't you think that you should be as kind as courteous as you can to someone who is also contributing to society and not just taking from it and making YOUR life harder? Just by the attitude you are having in this thread I can see the sense of entitlement you have in life and its gross.

You don't pay their wages. They would be just fine without you. If you don't think they are deserving of your money, stop spending your money there. It is as simple as that. They do NOT owe you any more than your product as fast as reasonably possible. Don't try to tell others how to do their job. That is for MANAGEMENT to do, NOT the customer.

Why do customers feel they can tell an employee how to do their job? If someone is not doing their job properly, they will be fired. If they are doing an adequate job, they will continue to have it. I don't pay $1.39 for a cheeseburger and expect it to be served with a smile. You bet your ass I appreciate it when it comes with a smile but I do not think that is what I am paying for, its a bonus that is welcomed anytime.

If someone is just being rude to you, then you need to make a decision whether you want to continue giving them your business while they employ that person. If its your personal opinion that you are paying for a pleasant and cheerful attitude in addition to your coffee, and you are not receiving that, then just get your coffee somewhere else. If every other place makes you feel the same way, then its obviously an issue with YOU and not them.

Bottom line, don't try to tell someone else how to do their job.

That isn't your place as a customer. You are not their boss.

The Education in America doesn't want to teach personal finance and business math. They focus too much on subjects that will not help you in real life, because they have to prepare you for college.

This is also the reason why there is so much problems in America with the rich getting richer, while the poor and lower class getting poorer.

Well, actually that's the situation in India.

Sweeping generalisation! I worked at McD a couple of years ago and I'm not stupid and have NEVER been to prison - don't even have a criminal record.

People work at McD for a variety of reasons: studying, in between jobs, broke or some other reason. I was broke - single mother with no money coming, I had to work there to support my daughter.

People working there are usually stupid as shit or have been in prison for quite a while.

And I did find it a piss poor, high pressured place to work with unforgiving staff and customers alike!

I think they need to figure out a way to automate the system..Maybe install the bin type money collector that they have in the tollway :)

Why are you as the paying customer entitled to anything more than the product which you are paying for? (I'm not. I'm paying for what I ordered, and I wasn't being a jerk when I ordered it. Therefore, I don't deserve a dose of attitude to go along with my order.)When you go to a fast food establishment, you are paying for the product, with the assumption it will be delivered promptly. If you have somehow been given the notion that ass licking is part of what you are paying for, I think I should put an end to that immediately. (NOW who is making assumptions? Again, all I want is what I ordered, which I ordered in a civil manner.)There is no mark-up in Fast Food for Customer Service. Its bare bones.

You do realize that if they quit that job and went on welfare that your taxes would go up right? (That argument is so weak, I'm not even going to dignify it with a response.) So don't you think that you should be as kind as courteous as you can to someone who is also contributing to society and not just taking from it and making YOUR life harder? (Again, you are assuming that I'm being a jerk to the cashier. I have NEVER, in my life, copped an attitude with a cashier at ANY establishment.) Just by the attitude you are having in this thread I can see the sense of entitlement you have in life and its gross. (My attitude in this thread is in direct proportion to the high and mighty attitude people like you are displaying. You seem to think that everyone is a jerk to cashiers, when that is not the case. I have no sense of entitlement for anything other than what I have worked for, and what I have paid for. And if I'm paying for what I have ordered, and been pleasant while doing so, then I deserve no such crappy attitude from someone who is pissed off at the world because their job sucks.)

You don't pay their wages. They would be just fine without you. (Oh really? My money doesn't pay their wages? Where, then, does the company get the money to pay their wages, pay for the material sold, pay the light bill, ect? The money tree out back? The Money Fairy? They get the money from me, and others like me who patronize their establishment.) If you don't think they are deserving of your money, stop spending your money there. It is as simple as that. They do NOT owe you any more than your product as fast as reasonably possible. Don't try to tell others how to do their job. That is for MANAGEMENT to do, NOT the customer. (You are absolutely right. I can take my business elsewhere. And what do you suppose would happen, when myself, and all the other customers take our business elsewhere, when we get tired of the crappy attitudes from the employees, and management not doing their jobs to correct that attitude? They fold. Then, I suppose, according to your logic, that it would be my fault that they lost their jobs and ended up on welfare, all because I wouldn't tolerate their crappy attitude.)

Why do customers feel they can tell an employee how to do their job? If someone is not doing their job properly, they will be fired. (As they should be.) If they are doing an adequate job, they will continue to have it. (Rather pathetic when "adequate" translates to doing a good job.) I don't pay $1.39 for a cheeseburger and expect it to be served with a smile. You bet your ass I appreciate it when it comes with a smile but I do not think that is what I am paying for, its a bonus that is welcomed anytime. ( I could care less if it comes with a smile or not. I do, however, care that I get what I paid for, without an attitude of the cashier thinking they are doing me a favor for delivering what I paid for.)

If someone is just being rude to you, then you need to make a decision whether you want to continue giving them your business while they employ that person. (That is a given. If they are being rude, they will not see me, or my money, ever again.) If its your personal opinion that you are paying for a pleasant and cheerful attitude in addition to your coffee, and you are not receiving that, then just get your coffee somewhere else. (See above, I just want what I paid for, nothing more, nothing less.) If every other place makes you feel the same way, then its obviously an issue with YOU and not them. (You certainly like to assume a lot, don't you? Did I say everyplace makes me feel that way? No, I did not.)

Bottom line, don't try to tell someone else how to do their job. (I wouldn't dream of it. But I will be more than happy to tell their supervisor that their cashier is a rude jerk, if warranted.)

That isn't your place as a customer. You are not their boss. (Oh, yes, I most certainly am. And you obviously can't figure out why, so I'll enlighten your young mind. I AM their boss, and the sole reason they exist. They exist to supply a service or product that they want me to purchase. They want my money, and it is my decision as to whether or not they get it. If they don't get that money from me, and others like me, they are out of business. Period. And, as a customer, all I want for my money is the service or product they are offering. I don't need a smile, I don't want my ass kissed, I just want what I am paying for, without rudeness. If that is too much for the employee to handle, then they won't get my business. If it is more important for that company to retain a rude employee, than it is to keep the customer (the supplier of money for that business) satisfied, then that is certainly a business that I don't need to patronize.)

I am done with this thread.

I am done with this thread.
I think that, however, anyone who comes online to post about or support such a minor incident also has an unhealthy sense of entitlement, because instead of letting it go, it sits in the back of their mind as if people should worship the ground on which they walk and anyone who fails to do so has just ruined their entire day or even their week. Going online to post about it, or arguing in defense of someone who does so, just adds to how pathetic the situation is.

Of course, one thing that is being overlooked is the fact that almost all fast food establishments have a handful of rude of employees and a handful of nice employees. I've gotten poor service at every fast food joint you can name, and I have also received good service from all of these places.

It's not as if you taking your business elsewhere is going to cause a mass exodus of patrons of these places. While one person vents about McDonald's and vows to take his business elsewhere, someone else is venting about Taco Bell, someone about KFC, someone about Burger King, and thus balance is preserved. Plus there are others who just want the food and care less about how they are treated.

Im trying to refrain from super long posts but you seriously piss me off with your stupid ass attitude.

You have no idea what boss means. Don't use words you don't understand.

Customer in NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM means the same as boss.

Do you make the decision how someone performs their duties at work? No. Then you are not their boss. If you were their boss, you wouldn't need to go complaining to supervisors because you can't be a man and deal with your own problems.

Also, before you go using the word ASSUME so much, maybe you should work on your reading comprehension. I didn't assume anything, I was asking questions and saying "IF", but obviously you didn't understand that.

You make me so angry I can't even explain it.

I have to clean up the messes people like YOU make in society. People who take an already angry and/or depressed person and report them to their supervisor because they were having a bad day. Do you not give people the benefit of the doubt? Maybe their friggin sister died and they are angry about that, but they needed to come to work to pay their bills, and you are going to report them to their supervisor because they were snappy with you?

So someone is snappy with you, and you report them, they are out of a job. Now they are my problem.

Not only does that company have to pay more money to hire new people, increasing their turnover ratio and thus raising company costs eventually leading to higher product prices, but now that person may turn to welfare or crime, and lead to higher taxes.

Instead, all you needed to do was put yourself in their shoes for a second. Did you ever sit back and think about THEM for a minute? Or do you only care about yourself and your pocket full of change?

I hope you realize that people who work at McDonalds are REAL PEOPLE. Their boss yells at them, their boyfriend dumps them, their dog dies. If they bring that emotion to work with them, don't you think you can cut them some slack? You have to deal with them for less then 3 minutes out of your day. You really can't get over a little attitude and just take your food and leave?

You think your coffee is more important than someone buying food for their family.
You think your $2.34 is more important than someone buying diapers for their baby.

I just hope you wake up real soon to reality. Give people a break.

You are obviously in a better place in life than they are. Why make their lives even harder?

Exactly. And it isn't limited to Fast Food. It is in every industry. And it isn't even the fact that people are necessarily rude, its that the customer perceived them that way.

If I am dealing with an 89 year old woman, I do not speak to them the same way as I do with a 23 year old man. To me, that is common sense. To someone else, that might not be such common sense because of the environment they grew up in.

If I walk up the counter and I am greeted with "Sup homie what can I get you?" I will laugh and feel very much at ease. But most elderly customers my take it as a sign of disrespect. Now that employee was just trying to make the person feel welcome, but because of a simple misunderstanding, they are now looked at as "rude."

When I worked customer service, I had a woman claim that calling her "Mam" was a racist term and that I should be fired for it. She was absolutely serious. She thought I was being racist. She was black, and I am white. In her mind, I was being a racist scumbag simply because I called her "Mam" instead of her first name.

And that is just miscommunications. Of course there is instances of genuinely rude people, but they exist in ALL areas of the world.

There are Police Officers who are rude.
There are Teachers who are rude.
There are Doctors who are rude.

I wonder Randy569, do you consider Doctors, Police Officers and Teachers your employees too? Or just "lowly fast food people"?

And with those situations, you don't necessarily have the option of avoiding them. But if you truly have a problem with an employee of a fast food restaurant, you do not need to go out of your way to try to get them fired. You can just go somewhere else, and be done with it.

If you feel personally offended, tell the person! "Excuse me sir, I'm not sure if I did something to offend you, but I felt you were quite rude to me and I am not sure why. Did I do something wrong?" Try that next time and wait for their response. They may reply with even more attitude, they may apologize for a misunderstanding. If they reply with even more attitude, then you can move on from there. But a lot of times, people will simply apologize or tell you they are just having a bad day.

Kickflip, in the interest of civility, I think it might be best just to agree to disagree. This is starting to get a bit over the top.

If I have offended you, I sincerely apologize. It certainly was not my intent.

The time has come to end this, and move on...

(Edit: The neg rep was a classy touch. You are entitled to your opinion, although I may not agree with it, it doesn't mean I'd neg rep you for it.)

Offended me? It isn't me you have to apologize to. Your intent way made very clear with your last post. If you truly believe you are the BOSS of employees who work in Fast Food, you need a reality check. Simple as that.

You crossed a line you can't go back across. I do not take these sort of things lightly.

As I said, you are in a better place than them. Isn't that enough for you?
