It's all about scale.
What scale do you want?
How many sites are you promoting NOW.
Xrumer can promote a hell of a lot of sites if set up maximum on a dedicated 1 gig host and all the trimmings..
All you need to ask yourself is
How much do i need NOW...
When you have made more cash, THEN scale up.
Home set up with decent broadband and a handful of proxies will deinitely do for a couple of dozen sites.
If and when you have hundreds (and many of you do) and thousands of sites in link wheels, then scale up.
No point paying high monthly hosting costs to support a few dozen sites.
No point NOT paying hosting costs if you are thundering cash out of hundreds of sites.
If you are a "build a couple of sites a week" merchant, and use some other link building tools as well, then it's quite concievable that you'll NEVER need to scale up.
If you employ a team of VA's and outsource a ton of linkbuilding, then splashing out on a all "bells and whistles" set up will be a lot cheaper for you in the long run
100mps I find 6 threads max
1gigmps then 50+
A line capable of shifting 1/2 a meg a second will support 6 threads adequately if the rest of the network set up is decent.
A setup like this will easily support the average "couple of sites a week" IM guy here.
First port of call is a decent router once you go above 8 threads.
Proxies if you have a strict ISP (a dozen or so will do if they are high speed)
Also, Xrumer is suprisingly easy to set up from home. My brother did a custom set up in a couple of hours and knew next to nothing about it before he started.
