Big changes in Google content scoring

You wrote that linking to relevant pages has a high value. Can you say how much value it has? For example 2 links to the top 2 in the search engines are worth 1 backlink from the site at position 10 or something similar?

Im only wondering if the relevant linking to other sites can help to outrank all these sites. So when you are at position 21 and link to all the sites before you that you get position one or so. (Not really but this direction)

Something like that?

And i presume you should link to a good amount of sites otherwiese probably your backlink will be more worth to the other sites than your site.

So there probably is some break-even point isnt it?

One thing I am seeing them do is linguistic ranking shifts due to how they are deciding what people are really looking for. I know an ecommerce site that held #1 for 7+ years for one of its primary keywords and all of a sudden it dropped to #3. The two sites that suddenly appeared in #1 and #2 were not competition. They were old sites that had to do with a different meaning of the original keyword (you know, like in a dictionary where a word or phrase has several meanings).

Dude! You just rocked my world! When did you notice this! What week of what Month??? Huge observation!

As far as I can tell the value is Huge... the cool thing is that you don't have to link to other sites... Just link to other relevant pages on your own site... They appear to have about the same influence. Just make sure the pages you link to are each tuned well for a single search term you want to rank for and do it a number of times with unique content.

Did you gather data about the worth of a backlink that dont have an anchor but the keyword in the url instead?

For example. You have a site keyword1keyword2.com and you want to set a backlink where you cant use anchors. So the backlink will appear with hxxp://keyword1keyword2.com in the site.

Is this really worth more than when you would have a domain aaa.com that doesnt contains the keyword in the url?

How about the keyword as directory or filename? Does this give more linkjuice for that keyword or not?

I don't have a way to measure link juice, but my tag ranks tests cover domain, path, document, parameters, and anchor keywords... document keywords almost always win in the sort order. Prior to the caffeine launch document and path keyword matches made up about 80 percent of the url matches on page 1 searches... I haven't repeated top trending yet, but it looks like google is trying to fill #1 on page 1 with a domain match whenever possible now...

I don't understand why you're going to release your system for free. It seems foolish to give your competitors your tools!

Release it as a service with a monthly fee attached.

This all seems like self sabotage. You've got a good thing here.

My competitors are Amazon and NextTag and Walmart... Nobody here is my competitor... I don't play in affiliate space. I have 200k sqft fulfillment center with 14,000 SKUs of product. I have 5-8 links on page 1 for about 40,000 keywords... and of course my best tricks aren't for sale... and no one here could afford them if they were.

I share info to get info. Occasionally I get insights and often I am able to do it without letting on what I'm working on... but that doesn't mean I can't provide totally awesome stuff for free! I like giving value and benefit. I certainly get quite a bit from here... I probably am the only person here not selling something.

You'll know I lost my gig when I do! LOL.

Until then enjoy... The graphs in my other post required over $1000 in AWS Alexa API calls and Google KeywordTool api calls to produce.

They were created on April 4th and no longer valid because google killed the serps with the Mayday Update... it will weeks before I have new valid graphs, but I'll share those too! ;)

Seriously... enjoy it while it last... heck pack it in an ebook and sell it if you want. I'm not copyrighting it. BHW might claim the rights though since its their forum, but I doubt it... not their style...

Damn, that's VERY generous of you...it must have taken years and weeks to work this out. You basically figured out the large portion of how big G's algorithm works... You could even sell this information to Microsoft or Yahoo so they could copy that in their systems LOL...

Fair enough! You're obviously at the top of your game. One day I hope to be as good as you.

Best of luck.

Also, it's funny you mention the Google KeywordTool api as i've just found it myself. (It's not exactly a secret, I know..)

I was surprised that it doesn't get much attention on here as it seems a MUST HAVE for keyword analysis.

It's only $0.25 for 1000 calls too.

There are a huge amount of factors that google use, and a lot of them are unmeasurable by us.

He's doing a damn good job though.

Not really... Despite top management, there actually are some smart folks at Microsoft... huge piles of money will always draw smart people. :)

But, please feel free to prove me wrong. If you can sell this for good money go for it! I have no issue with you making money off my work. Claim it as you own even... totally ok with me. Could probably use this info to land a decent SEO job, but that is about the extent of its value. Unless you figure out how to make money from websites using it. Which is what I do, but so far only with online retail sites...

Didn't take years.... once I had budget and approval to spend 2 weeks solid I build the SEO lab. Cost about $300 + my time to build. Then about $2000 to date in various API calls... I think since Google is raping ecommerce sites with the recent changes I feel even better about sharing my work for two reasons. First, if I am struggling with the recent changes what the heck is everyone without my resources going to do? Second, if google doesn't give a shit about helping me then who does? Well, I've gotten a lot of good advice and information on BHW. If gotten some really bad advice and information here too, but for the most part its general well intentioned and some common sense and due diligence will help you sort it all out.

Plus... I dont consider myself an expert. In fact... in actuality... I'm not... thats why I have to go to such lengths to understand things... the experts make a shitload of money without the need to spend time and money on understanding concepts with experiments... They just see the patterns in the noise and prove it sales. LOL... I make them sound like Black Hat Idiot Savants! BlackHatRainMan would be a killer alias! Damn... maybe someone without an account will read this and claim it. ;)

Seriously... The only thing I do know is scale. There is plenty of opportunity for everyone who has the initiative to claim it. Its hard work. You make more money faster with a day job, but if you do it right, if you figure it out then good things can happen, but you have to love the work to reach that goal. Unfortunately, very very few people have what it takes to invest 500 hours in building a nice ass website then spend 1000 hours building it to PR6 or higher.

I know many claim to do it faster, but if I look back at my own success rate for building big successful websites... it averages out to about 1 a year... with multiple failures to go along with it. ALL of my failures stem from lack of commitment or motivation or time...which is another way of saying I didn't love the work with those or I would have found a way.

If you are laughing all the way to the bank off my posts, well shit, that makes me want to post more. That's high praise. To date though... not a single person as posted that they made a single dollar off my info...except more me... but I play a different game than most.

Before you spend on KeywordTool!!!

Google is misleading in its API prices... When I started the SEO Lab here is how it worked:

$0.25 for 1000 Units...
KeywordTool costed 20 Units per call which actually equates $0.25 for 50 calls. This was acceptable for me because out of the 300 suggestions per call that came back 40-50 were good.

Now each keyword suggestion costs 1 API Unit. Thats 300 Units to get 40-50 good suggestions... I'm looking into other service APIs for keyword suggestions... Google is getting replaced in the SEO Lab.

The new version is supposed to be more tunable... a.k.a. I can make fewer calls if I am more specific about what I want, but I don't know what I want... that is what I want to discover. Google made it only useful for people trying to repeat AdWords successes and nothing else.

What if I'm pretty much only interested in monthly search volumes and maybe related keywords (Long tails, I guess).

Basically I enter a keyword, it checks the monthly search volume. Then from there I would check the other stats as applicable. Surely that would then only be 1 call as I only want 1 stat back..

I'm basically trying to create a keyword scoring system. High being hard to rank 1st for, low being easy.

I'm going to use a lot of the factors you seem to be using, but they will be conditionals.

The most expensive tests will be performed last (EG the ones that cost money) and the rest will just churn away in the background.

I just hired my new server yesterday, so the programming will be full steam ahead now. I'll keep you guys updated, but admittedly not as openly as ipopbb.

Love this and you other threads. Really informative.

Rather than making cursory remarks about some elements going up while others going down on the data you are releasing, why not pop it all into a spread and generate a nice chart graph to show just how radical the moves might be?

At least this way you can get a historical view, and it might show some particular elements to be consistent in their import.

It will also help people understand just how many changes are there to consider from quarter to quarter.

This is a great share nonetheless. Good work.

i tried to use <samp> and <cite> as u mention and still my old pages with <h1> and <strong> rank better than it

That is a freaking nice peace of info! Some really nice ideas and inspiration for my own SE test network.
I agree with OP, it's still raw data. You can't say you have it all by just being able to see which tag gives more juice (especially it's measured for single tag only). Anyway - big thanks for sharing that info! Really good read!

The wealth of information in this thread is more than valuable. Thanks for sharing it with everyone!
