Big changes in Google content scoring

@ipopbb

So how do you insert these tags? I mean its not very often needed to use computer code or citations. So forcing such a thing into a website containing the keyword would look spammy isnt it?
Or do you only use the tags that can be inbound with its real intended use?

I make tweaks to my actual revenue producing sites sparingly... I tweak a very small amount and then measure impact for weeks and months.

I use this data in a very simple way. On my online stores originally I had H1 tags around the product name because every !@#$ing White Hat site said to do so. I ran this experiment and saw H1 tags rank in the 50's at the time and blockquote was outranking title tags! I swapped blockquote for the H1 and adjust my stylesheets so it looked the same to shoppers. Within two weeks revenue attributed to google referrers went up 40%. I've never seen a boost like that since but updating the tag and nothing else when this list changes has always produced gains for the past 11 months (Usually around 5%) and probably will going forward. The list usually show change worthy events every 2-4 months, so about quarterly, which smacks of "routine process" over at Google. It is stable enough that SEO growth is forecasted at my company and I never miss a goal... In fact SEO is the company's growth leader... I have other tactics that help... but this thread is about Tag Rank... one of my other tools is in another of my threads... It's more valuable than this one and you can here crickets chirping in that thread! Its called More data from the SEO Lab and has charts that when you look at patterns overall are quite shocking and even have me reconsidering my whole perspective of Google SEO, but so far I'm alone in that notion... maybe I'm just seeing something that isn't there...

Thanks and good luck!

This is some amazing stuff ipopbb, I haven't even read the whole thread because your replies are so long.... and I really am not understanding some of it. But I am trying my best, I have a question about samp tags, do I simply do this?

<samp>my keyword</samp>

should I be putting multiple samp tags on one page or site?

I'm confused on what exactly this does? What does samp mean?

I would appreciate if you could answer this for me! thanks again.

Thank you very very much for this information, much appreciated :)

I wish I had a lab like that. ipopbb, thanks for sharing all these stuff.

I'm considering turning my grid into a java app that can function as a command line tools or a web service server as well as a Java API... for windows/*nix users

That way people can use my work. Perl, Ruby, Flex and PHP folks would have to go through the web service API but C,C++,Java,.NET folks could integrate directly. And sysadmin type folks would have their scriptable command-line access...

hmmm... has me thinking hard. ;)

Thanks a lot, this is pure gold.

A few issues I would like your opinion on:
What is the best way of using multiple types of tags in a page?
How their combined density and individual density have an effect, because I understand that between h1 and blockquote I should only pick one but how about the strong, em, samp, kbd or i, b, u, big, small tags, should I aim of using each of them at least once ?

I haven't had a chance to test this yet... It is near the top of my todo list. Is this a Currency or a Bitmask. If its a currency then a keyword in B tags 3 times might be worth a keyword in a U tag etc... then we need to calculate the exchange rates. If it is a bit mask then using a keyword in B 3 times or once as the same effect of setting a bigint somewhere to look like ...00001000... I think it is a currency because more density seems to really matter in placement . usually 5-10% in raw source can win the content scoring contest for most keywords. Odds are there is an exchange rate.

Samp is a deprecated HTML tag for sample code. Most people these days use CODE tag for the same purpose.

I can't really say what you should or should not do. I personally prefer to make changes sparingly then measure effects a lot. When I discovered this data I initially only used it on the tags that I use for product names in the online store. I have only used the best appropriate tag for replacing H1... to date I have replaced h1 with h3-6, div, p , blockquote, b,u... then style those tags to look like an h1 so the shoppers don't see a change. when address tag was near the top last quarter I did put my keywords in address tags in the footer and used jQuery to hide them for JS users...which is damn close to all human beings on my site. When address fell I took that down but continued using the best alternative to h1 for a page's primary heading.

I have had continued success with that. Id say don't focus on the top tag. Focus on most optimal , but appropriate substitutions for a few strategic places...

Ok thanks for your help, and about you putting your lab into a script that we could use, that would be simply amazing, not sure if I could afford it because I'm sure you would sell it for quite a bit but maybe one day :)

thanks for sharing this....they will be many webmasters giving up if the information is real!

Thanks!

The data is real... It's meaning and value are debatable! ;)

Have you tested these against different rich snippets such as star rating, price range, and map api?

Thanks for sharing your data!.

More importantly, thanks for sharing the method of doing it. :)

Do you have empirical data about tlds?

For example is it true that certain tlds are ranking higher than others only because of the tld?

Or is a backlink from a .edu really worth more than on a .com only because it is a differen tld?

I don't have that data currently, but I plan to add tests for it. It is totally something I can measure and I'll make a post when I have the data.

How about the file-endings? Most blogs are rewritten via .htaccess to show .html. But is it really a difference if you use .php .php4 .htm .html or .whatever?

I doubt that makes a difference... I already have some data along those lines involving URLs with query parameters in them... google doesn't mind and they trend upwards as you approach page one. If the mime-type is text/html google treats it all the same.

File types might rank differently for keywords... thats in my version 2 of the test suite. People have asked for my source code and I plan to deliver it in a version 2 of the experiment probably later this week. I just need to convert my report tool to PHP from java... I removed some stuff that was redundant or not producing and added some new tests and added more detail to others... The new test group will be 180ish test cases and will come with instructions to step it up properly.

Cheers

Thanks ipopbb for such informative and important information.

You have really started an interesting conversation here on such an important topic :)
