Google doesn't treat all links the same. Some links (backlinks), such as from edu, are valued as more trustworthy and therefore have more authority & are helpful towards SEO objectives.

There are links form profiles, canvas and regular blogs that work great.

If they're do-follow and contextual, and you've managed to get over 1000 chars of relevant text to support your link, then yes they're useful. A naked url from an otherwise bare forum profile isn't going to do squat though.
