Google Update - May 27th 2022 - What I Have Noticed

Join this video, the comments here from Black Hat World, and other forums. It seems that we have reached a consensus, that everything has to do with domain authority, whether through links, being a large site (with many pages) or having an old domain.

At least what I've read is people losing positions to Reddit, Quora, .edu sites. Others complaining of losing positions to blogs and large magazines (my case). Some people who invested heavily in backlinks did well. People with sites with few pages are doing poorly.

It looks like Google's "wall" is getting higher for who can reach the top SERP positions.

I already know what the next strategy I will follow if the update stays like this.

I checked my competition yesterday using ahrefs (home improvement niche), some big players lost 70-80% of their traffic, some stayed the same.

Medium and smaller sites, similarly. My site, 4-5 years old, some 400 pages, display ads + amazon affiliate, mostly review and the best of articles with some info articles, mostly paid guest outreach backlinks, lost some 25-30% traffic with this update, although traffic started to decline very slowly with march 2022 update (affiliate sites update)...

I have absolutely no idea why some sites in this niche (all have affiliate links everywhere) lost some traffic, why some stayed the same, and some even gained a little bit. Noticed youtube videos on every search page in larger number, some very simple and even idiotic, but obviously google don't want people to leave their platforms...

I don't agree that old sites with high DA are increasing in rankings, its just bias. I see a ton of junk PAA sites increase in ranks and they are not old or have high DA. Yep, even for my niche, I see a lot of PAA sites on the first page. Even my own PAA site (not this one) has gone up during the update.

site age: 8 years old

My site is thin on content as it is a membership site allowing users to earn crypto.

End Of May my traffic has increased by around 80%. Absolutely no idea why.

It sure looks like big media companies stays winning. But I also see sites that have loads of posts are ranking higher. No matter quality.

In fact, I’ve seen this in my SERPs in the last 2-3 months, that quantity of posts seem to matter a lot.

Yes I've seen this too. Volume of articles seems to be a ranking factor....

Not trying to sound like an asshole, but how is a site with 65 articles considered an authority website? Keep publishing more content, and I'm sure it will bounce back. Also, make sure to drop a couple of backlinks here and there in the future to boost your authority.

I can tell you it was an authority one, Proper branding and all of the other stuff, I was ranking in the top 10 for keywords whose difficulty score was 80+ on many tools. I was in very heavy competition.

I have saw...(even yesterday, bad metrics on GSC), they have take out from my site, a lot of keywords... (attributed to my website)....

My average position has managed to recover
The clicks are the same because of improved CTR
Impressions are still down (thousands less than before the update)
Google behaviour is weird but it's understandable as the update is still ongoing

A website of a client of me has also some significant drops in keywords - down 200. Simply not in the SERPs anymore.
Bunch of other keywords dropped significantly, yet another bunch is recovering since today, with huge increases - back to normal and over it.
The site has been only white-hat link optimized ( except a bunch of old blogspot links ). Many topic related directory links and web 2.0 stuff, plus a few guest posts.
Will continue to monitor the changes and report back soon.
