Google Update - May 27th 2022 - What I Have Noticed

All I did was stay patient and believe that my site is better than some of the crap ranking well and it must have been some kind of a fluke on Google's side. During that period many people on BHW had the exact same issue and most of them recovered in around the same space.

Yesterday some of the keywords that disappeared already got back which was exactly what was happening back in June too.

I will start getting depressed if the situation won't get back to normal by the half of October. Till then, I work on other stuff.

I guess it's now all wait and watch.

@AuraMarketing, I use AAWP but never use Amazon descriptions, instead writing my own bullet points + 200-300 descriptions of the product in my own words.

More than 50% of my keywords disappeared from TOP 100 on Sunday but I had the exact same issue in June and they returned to their normal positions after 2 weeks.

By tanked do you mean what I described above?
It's been around 2 weeks. Any signs of improvement?

Just chiming in here. I was affected by the July PRU and still have not recovered. Lost around 80% of my Google traffic. The site has no ads and is monetized purely by Amazon affiliates with AAWP. Still no signs of recovery yet, and have been feeling pretty disheartened until recently.

So far, I have:
  • Removed a good deal of affiliate links within purely informational articles.
  • Added author bios with LinkedIn links to the bottom of each article.
  • Complete reconfigured my reviews post template (Pros & Cons, unique imagery, design updates).
  • Redesigned my entire homepage. Previously was very obvious I was an affiliate website, now I'm trying to brand more as a middle-ground info + reviews like Wirecutter.
  • Added more informational content.
What I have planned:
  • Continue to add more informational content and pause review articles for now.
  • Move all my existing reviews over to the new template.
  • Further adjust article imagery to be more unique and use fewer stock photos.
  • Conduct some dedicated link-building through guest posts, HARO, and PRs - maybe... hard when my cash flow has been cut significantly.
Current performance

Those who have recovered, what adjustments have you made - if any? Should I be ditching AAWP as others have had similar issues?

@Dude Zone AAWP should not be causing this issue. If in doubt, use a max of 1 bullet point.
My main site has went from strength to strength and that's with the high number of reviews. It's all based on how well the content has been written and how it helps the reader.

@Dude Zone

I have an AAWP website that also got hit at the end of July with one of the PR updates. The freefall looks just like your GSC graph. BUT it recovered on 9/26 when the core update finished rolling out and not only did it recover, it gained 120% more traffic out of the blue. I didn't do much in that time period either other than just general posts updates and fine tuning things. I sure as hell wasn't going to add posts or spend a bunch of time when google basically tanked the site. Some posts I have 5-10 AWP links on are getting good traffic again, so AAWP is not the issue.

So I just waited and the core update rolling out flipped the switch and traffic is now at all time highs (with AAWP). Honestly I don't think there's anything you can do to get the traffic back until Google roles out the next major update. Fine tuning your website now may help with that when it comes, but don't think you're going to just change some things here and there and all of a sudden traffic shoots right back up. Google AI tanked your site, and the only thing bringing it back is google AI unfffff'ing itself to get you back to where you should be. I think you have to WAIT until the next major update to see a reversal. If your site is generally good, and I would assume it is since your impressions and clicks growth look decent, that this is solely on Googles end, not yours.

So at this point decide if it's worth your time to spend on it ,or focus on another endeavor, until Google makes up their mind.

Thanks for your insight and advice here. I know Google's AI screwed me and it's going to take another update to potentially get back.

Speaking more on AAWP, do you think it's too aggressive if I have AAWP links, in-text Amazon affiliate links, and buttons all pointing to the same product, or is that too excessive? My product reviews are pretty detailed, so I like to have the links conveniently placed throughout so they're easy to see and find without having to scroll too far. Just trying to exhaust all my options to hopefully rebound in a future update.

I typically have a AAWP comparison table at the beginning that consolidates the products on page, and then below it when I start going over the products individually, I’ll have a single AAWP box with the affiliate buy link for that product. All other links to that same product in the post are to a dedicated page on the site devoted to that individual product. I do this to minimize the amount of redundant affiliate links and even if they click on the product page I created, it’s full of affiliate links for it since I don’t care if that page ranks or not.
