Id like to update the thread to a few more modern practices. This one still has gems in it though. So, I’ll most likely make a part 2 this summer.

The best way to check if your website was penalized by an automatic penalty is to login to Google Analytics and review your Google organic traffic. If you see a drop in traffic during the dates that Google released an algorithmic change, then most probably you were hit and that's the reason that your traffic dropped.

Also by logging into the Google Search Console and selecting "security & Manual actions" and selecting "Manual Actions" to see if you have any actions taken against. It's not always there though.
