[Successful Journey] Scaling Amazon Affiliate from $1000/m to $10k

I got hit as well. It sucks since last month was my highest month and I was going to double that this month. But, shit happens..

Google is full of shit, when I see the top 3 ranking on my keywords they just suck.

I updated some of my pages and tried following google tips they gave, and guess what? The pages I updated went from #4-5 to page 2-3. Fuck this shit.

My plan is to focus on info posts more. I read somewhere that once you are accepted on Mediavine they don't kick you out if your traffic declines. Hopefully that's true.

Good luck to both of us.

First, a huge thank you for sharing such an in-depth, ongoing analyses of your progress. It's heartening to see that using Amazon affiliate is still profitable. I'm still learning to make the leap into blogging for money, my experience in online sales coming from Amazon, Ebay and Poshmark. I did self publishing for awhile, and had some success with that. I figure blogging is similar, although instead of being on marketplaces like Kindle and Kobo etc its now on ones own real estate, your website.

I find it a little disheartening reading of the most recent nerf Google has done on websites. It seems since the Corona shutdowns began, more barriers are being implemented against all but the monopolies. Either through drastic cuts to commissions or complete closures of access. I will be most curious to see how experienced website creators/owners like yourself examine workarounds to these barriers as they come up. I'm sorry that it happened just as you were prepared to get your payday out of selling the site. Hopefully you will find a quick recovery route and still be able to make this happen sooner rather than later.

I'm curious of one thing. Have you been building an email list from the site, and if so what percentage of your web traffic comes from email drip campaigns to them?

Hopefully, I don't get kicked out of Mediavine for having less than the required amount of traffic until I can recover. At the very least I hope they pay me when the time comes for everything I made...
Don't worry about that, once you're approved they won't kick you even if your traffic drops.

Update

I spent yesterday writing more info articles and looking over my previous top pages on the main site. I also reoptimized 4 of the pages I tweaked after the update and will see if they start to recover.

However, it doesn't seem like it will. That's why I know Google is full of shit as I've tweaked the page exactly how they say they want it with custom images of the products since I actually bought them.
Instead of improving, the page went from top 10 to 89th and that was done on April 12 so it should at least be in the top 30 by now.

My advice to anyone that got hit is to make minor tweaks and never try to request indexing after updating.

Just gonna keep pushing out more info content and get that ad money up until Google figures out how they are treating affiliate content. So far I've worked on 4 pages and they've all fell out of the top 10-20 down to #80s.

Sorry to hear you got hit as well.

And I'm having the same results on my reworked pages too. I think touching them right now is a bad idea. I won't even run my second site through surfer just in case I lose my current rankings for that site.

Just keep pushing out info content for a while.

Another thing I'll do that I have one example of it working exceptionally well for is creating woo-commerce product pages to write reviews on products.

Like with any business there are ups and downs. Things will always come up no matter what you do if it's real estate - the houses in the area where you buy them can start losing value. If its stocks the companies can go bankrupt, covid might cause profits and valuations to dip.

So if you're planning to get into anything the best time is always now. Don't worry about Google and Amazon, Ebay or the rest. Just do it and come what may is how I approach things.

As to your question, I've never built an email list since most affiliate site business model has never been focused to build an audience. In most cases, people are looking for a one-time solution so when they search for the best lawnmower they'll buy the best one and that's likely the last you'll ever see them. That's how it has been for my previous sites at least. So I have no traffic coming from email campaigns.

These days, I've built my second site to have an audience with the way how I wrote the content and the types of content on the site. I'll also be pushing socials and an e-commerce arm of the site where the products that I review on most of my BEST XYZ articles will funnel into my own dropshipping store with ads going to that site.

Don't worry about that, once you're approved they won't kick you even if your traffic drops.

That's great to know since I can get an extra $20-$30 from ads.

Before this, I thought that the little $20/day is useless but now that my affiliate commissions are down everything adds up. So I would love to have the site with them till I can recover and continue growing.

I always request for indexing right after posting/updating. Why do you think it's better not to do this?

Have you hosted a second site on the same google console? Or have you created a new one?

That's the goal of the google dance, to keep you on your toes ;)

That's amazing that you are still averaging over $100 a day. Hope it won't be hard for you to scale it.

Yeah, seo is amazing. Like, you can grow it very big and even if you get knocked down, you are at a very decent daily earnings on autopilot

Update

Missed out on work yesterday due to a meeting. But on to the update..

Over the past few days of writing info content, I've quickly come to realize that I suck at writing them. Or rather, I have no experience with them.

As a result, it's taking me much longer to write a 1500 word info article than it would take to write a Bext XYZ type. I haven't tracked the time it takes yet ( will do it tomorrow) but I feel it's somewhere between 2-3 hours.

But for some strange reason, I find more joy in writing them than I do writing commercial content. I think it's because I have to first learn the information and then put it in my own words.
Plus, for the main site niche, I've started getting into it myself and found that a few of the articles provided real information that I found useful to know.

All in all, I actually don't mind it as much as I thought I would as it's pretty rewarding to learn new shit. Granted it doesn't make as much money as affiliate content can.

-------------

I was looking into some analytics of the sites to see if I can find anything new. And I actually found a few things that I really never took note of to date.

My main site was 96% affiliate. Not that I've changed my mind about focusing mostly on affiliate content but when you look at things from a diversity standpoint it really shows. Take a look at these screenshots of analytics:

2cab9cd4f5f33eeb8bdd46a7327f78fb.png

In the screenshot above I've filtered for affiliate content which is the bulk of the traffic when you compare it to my info content below:

e5187759a064d3fc81e15c429898e00b.png

You can also see the big difference in traffic from 12-13k per week for affiliate content down to 500-800/ week for info content. Also, look at the average time on page... there's such a big difference.

One thing to note is that I didn't write any of these info articles. I also didn't edit them or optimize them after getting them back.
My goal now is to spend a few months adding high-quality info articles that are fully optimized for snippets and traffic keywords.

If I can bring the info traffic up to 8k a week and recover the affiliate content this site would easily be making $600/day average.
-----------------------

Another thing I was looking at is the difference in conversion rate and earning potential between the niches. Here's my initial assessment.

One niche is a popular passion while the other is a necessity for a group of persons. I looked at them over the last 7 days since the traffic is coming around to the same numbers since site 2 is improving:

Site 1 - Last 7 Days

86f05eade95d74b5a8cbfbf0dc0286e7.png

With site 1, people are spending lots of time on the page reading the reviews because they don't need the items as much and there are plenty of options available. So it only makes sense to see everything = more time on page. Most "Best" type reviews I go over 7-9 items.

Site 2 - Last 7 Days

63ec50bab83a0267bb7d1aa4bbab6e04.png

This site, on the other hand, has shorter but more definitive reviews that say this is what you need. You don't have any other option and so no need to waste time. So the average time on the page is lower for some of the pages. However, check out the earnings for the site in the last 7 days.

6b0baf48524ab111fed2af20e627dbde.png

Compared to the earnings for the main site over the last 7 days.

585ca69c9180e4f59b6b2fbe01f8fe27.png

Both sites have items within the same price range and are on the same commission structure. But for site 2, people need those items no matter how much they cost far more than they do the items on-site 1.

So they'll browse Site 1 and instead of buying my recommendation, they go with something cheaper most times. On-site 2, the solution I offer is the only answer you'll find. You better take it cause you know you need it.

That's the difference between solving people's problems vs their passion.

I always request for indexing right after posting/updating. Why do you think it's better not to do this?

Have you hosted a second site on the same google console? Or have you created a new one?

I was only saying it for people that have been impacted by the recent Product Reviews Update. So far all the articles I've tried making better according to their guidelines actually fell far more in rankings even with minor tweaks.

I'd much rather let them slowly recrawl the page based on my site's crawl rate and get a few more days out of the page being ranked than reindexing and dropping positions immediately or a day later.

I host no more than 3 sites per search console. I have 7 sites but only two are fully built out. So 2 search consoles.

That's the goal of the google dance, to keep you on your toes ;)

I don't mind a google dance. This is more like an earthquake. At least with the dance, you know that you'll have a direction but so far nothing is moving in a sensible way considering I did make changes in accordance with what they want. Yet 2 sentence reviews and summaries that were clearly written by kindergarten are fine.

That's amazing that you are still averaging over $100 a day. Hope it won't be hard for you to scale it.

Once you get used to making a certain amount anything below it feels like peanuts. As for scaling, it's just a matter of time. It shouldn't be too hard if given enough time and whether I feel like taking bigger risks.

Sorry to hear. I got hit as well. Another thing I would like to ask you about display ads. Did you find any drop in conversions when you put display ads on affiliate sites?

I'd say there was at most a 1% dip in conversions. However, the stability of ad revenue makes up for that drop so it is really hard to notice.

Affiliate commissions and sales fluctuate daily since people don't just spend $800 - $2000 for no reason every single day. But they won't have a problem clicking or viewing the same amount of ads every day.

So IMO the stability of "additional" ad revenue is worth the uncertainty of affiliate commissions.

One thing that did go down for sure is the number of clicks and site speed. But I believe that if you were gonna buy something you would buy it anyway. And if you weren't then it doesn't matter if you click on an ad.

Sticky On The Journey And Keep Working On It, Result Will Be Amazing.
No stopping for me. The journey of building something that allows me to relax and have things on my own terms is worth too much to stop.

Interesting about affiliate site. any free tools for find out low completion keywords?

I've only ever used ahrefs.

Yeah, seo is amazing. Like, you can grow it very big and even if you get knocked down, you are at a very decent daily earnings on autopilot

I agree. You'll still be earning more from a tanked website than you would on most dividend stocks or real estate rentals for a fraction of the cost it'd take you to acquire those assets.

Thanks. But I see a huge list of the other products from coffee machines to power washers to furniture (all of them not related to my niche) in my amazon dashboard. If lost those clicks, I wonder if it's worth it.

awesome journey and lot of hard working to have good income like you and you must have youtube channel
people will learn lot from you my friend

Looking forward to the result bro...will be proud of you if your aim are archive ...

Quick Update

Sorry for not updating daily as I said I would but my mom decided to visit so I've been offline most of the time.

After her close miss with covid, I realize now that we shouldn't neglect to spend time with our parents. You never know when either you or they will be gone.

But I've still managed to complete at least one article every day. So I'm sitting at 34 articles to upload.

Earnings for the Days Missed:

Still roughly $100/day thanks to the second site gradually picking up. It had its first $100 day this month too. However, I'm still clueless as to fixing my main site as it seemed to be improving before, and then it fell again.

None of the articles I tweaked improved either. I'll get back to it around the 25th once my mom is gone back to the US.

Thanks. But I see a huge list of the other products from coffee machines to power washers to furniture (all of them not related to my niche) in my amazon dashboard. If lost those clicks, I wonder if it's worth it.
Don't think you got what I meant. People who would've bought those things will buy them regardless of your ads.

But if you don't have a lot of traffic especially traffic to pages that aren't monetized then it's pointless. If you do have a lot of those pages like 1000 views per day then ads are worth it.

Wonderful journey - I just finished reading all 60 pages!

Small question tho:
For the articles you have that are over 3000 words, any on page SEO plugin will suggest adding the KW for 0.5% or 15 in this example.
Isn't that considered keyword stuffing? If it is in your opinion, what should be the optimum aim?

Thanks and looking forward to new updates!

Update

I've officially turned 29 yesterday. And had some time to reflect on my growth and honestly, I've got no regrets.

Internet marketing has been the best decision I've made. I dropped out of University cause of financial issues and I just didn't feel like it was worth it. Looking back it was probably one of the best moves as I have the freedom to do what I want and make more than doctors and politicians here.

The journey has been filled with plenty of ups and downs but I love all of it. It helps me to grow as a person and has further improved my passion and dedication to see things through.

There's never an oh well I should just quit moment even with the current state of SEO and Google/Amazon. Adapt and Survive.

With that in mind, I've been putting together a detailed plan on how I plan to move forward. It's a 4 phase thing and I'm still working out the details but so far it seems like the way to go.

I'll share what I have so far just for full disclosure and for other people that are just as passionate about what they are doing and don't just want to flip flop to the next working method.

Doing these things might not guarantee a successful recovery and further improvements but I think they will improve my skills as a content writer.

Phase-1: Planning For Recovery
  • Change Pronouns used throughout reviews.
  • Improve Core Web Vitals through Nitropack
  • Create a Disavow List
  • Is Product Variants/ Updates Included in Reviews
  • Check each product review for Unique information
  • Social Proof of Product Reviews
  • Add Useful Things to Look For Section to Reviews
  • Include additional images using Photoshop
  • Check Content Originality
  • Include Detailed Pros and Cons
  • Check if the review is generic.
  • Can Relevant Sources be linked?
  • Include Non-Generic Headlines for the products
  • Make headlines and Titles More User Friendly
  • Update Reviews To Be More Accurate
  • Update my Review Article Questionnaire
  • Run a Full Site Audit
Next update I'll share my thoughts on each and why I figure they are worth doing to recover and continue ranking.
