Why don't you leave your email on the top of your site and asked them to feel free to email you if they want a link exchange. That's what I'm doing on my blogs that's why even if I didn't optimize them they rank because of link exchange. Maybe you should try that.

if you just PR fan then make ONLY PR backlinks......just 10-15 is good enough. After 3 month you have at least PR 2-3-4.

PR does help if you are trying to flip your websites. I built 20 in november and they all have a pr of 1-3 making a profit of about $1000 so far. I think I will get rid of the so-so ones and keep the good ones.
