Fantastic idea. Good move by ahrefs as well, to top up their database with more domain data.

Database is one thing. I think they are also trying to get rid of competition. They saw Ubersuggest as a threat when it grew in popularity with the help of Neil Patel's followers and connections. This might be the reason they gave away free backlinks checker, free keyword research tool and now webmaster tools. They might also be planning something big (like a search engine) and gaining followers. I see it as a great business strategy.

To be fair they probably got sick of free trial abusers, and decided to use those low paid guys to their advantage.

However, I just signed up a site up to test it out......I gotta say, the tool does seem very cool, and very useful.

They are providing more data than GSC. They are giving complete backlinks & keywords (export is limited), whereas GSC only shows a sample of data.

There are many advantages that the average users won't see. For example, if your site gets a penalty for spam links, they won't remove the penalty even if your disavow all links on GSC, because Google won't show you all links and wants you to figure it out yourself because that's not their problem. Ahrefs backlinks data can help you find & remove all spam links. Some users may not need it but it'll be a life saver for many others.

It's not an add-on to GSC but a standalone search console. You can use it independently without sharing GSC data. As far as data is concerned, they are crawling your sites even without AWT, but this tool will share that data with you too. You can never use most internet services if you worry about them stealing your data.

Yeah...I just used the file verification.
Probably a good idea not to attach accounts like that.
I always try to avoid it, in general, if possible.

It does give you some insight into the movement of keywords you already rank for, though.
