I'd really appreciate your in-take on this,

So I have a big money site, and I just got an expired domain which was live WITH TRAFFIC just a few months ago (no penalization, etc)

The expired domain was literally doing the SAME thing my website does now (100% same niche), the content and anchor text profile are 100% relevant.

However, it would take too long to set up redirection rules for each category / page,

Would it be ok if I 301 all URLS from the expired domain (since the domain had MANY URLS, just like my current website has) directly to the home-page, and let it pass the link juice and authority to my internal pages? The idea here is that if I only redirect the root domain to my home-page, I'll be losing out on all the link juice the domain had before.

My website already has traffic and good backlinks, this is just another business that I bought (domain) which didnt want to continue working in the same niche,

How long does undoing a 301 take for ranking to come back if you remove.

in my experience 2 - 3 weeks. I recently did an experiment where 301 actually hurt the site's ranking. So i removed it after 2 months and the site start to climb back after 2 -3 weeks. but its slow.

Any traffic from those redirect domains? Thx for sharing.

No traffic. They were very old expired domains.

I heard before it ranks for short time then the ranks goes back to normal

Well , I have done a couple of experiments with redirects. In one experiment, the rankings actually went down but in other case it gave a strong boost and the site's been ranking fine since 7 months.

They were very old expired domains so few years back.

You can search the BHW forum there are few guides. I used https://www.expireddomains.net/ plus i have access to ahref. These 2 are enough to find good domains if you have lots of time to waste

You can directly redirect the domain from domain panel. I use namecheap and it offers to redirect the domain directly from its panel. So you dont need hosting to setup a site with an expired domain and then redirect it via htaccess

Would love to see what happens if you just setup a site for each domain and used it as a PBN.

Again, its too tedious for me. Plus i tried it with 3 domains and only 1 of them actually helped. The other 2 negatively hurt my site rankings.

Yes as long as it has some good backlinks. worked for me. May be it worked for you as well

Usually expired domains are non-indexed. I have worked with an expired domain that is indexed in Google and results are same

Please search BHW. There are quite a few tutorials on how to do that. I usuaylly use https://www.expireddomains.net/ and Ahref/Screaming Frog

Fortunately in these 3 domains, all links are pointing to home. If you find an expired domain with links pointing to its inner pages, you might have to use htaccess to first redirect all inner pages to home and then redirect home to your target site

They were expired domaisn but had links already...so all i did is set up a redirect and then get them crawl by Google

I worked on a similar case and we redirected individual pages to similar pages and then redirect all other pages to home. So for example
If my site has bluecolor.com/color-1
and the expired site also has a page bout color-1 then its best to redirect that page to bluecolor.com/color-1 instead of home

Ofcourse if its a huge site then it could be a problem. In that case 301 all links to an individual page on your site will be your safest bet. If that page starts ranking, then you can redirect that page to your homepage
