Case Study - Expired Domains 301 Experiment

Unfortunately namecheap doesnt have this kind of feature, that you redirectly make a 301 redirect without registering your domain in a hosting to perform the redirect.
Go to your domains, click Manage then will see this:

So you can do it in Namecheap, no problem whatsoever.

its ok if i will redirect the domain from my hosting side?.. also when you 301 those domain did you buy https to those 301 or not ?

yes you can do it if you have hosting and free time :D
also no https .....i did simple http redirect

Thanks for the share.

After you redirected the expired domains to your money site.

Do those backlinks (from the expired domains) appear on your money site domain ahrefs report?

Great share ! I have a couple of questions @seoz87 :

1) Let’s say I found a relevant expired domains with strong backlinks, would you recommend registering it from the same company where my money site’s domain & hosting is active with or register the domain with other company and then 301 ?

2) After registering should I immediately re direct it to the target URL or let the domain warm up for a few days ?

Would appreciate your advice, thanks ! :)

not really care about ahrefs...i checked in Google and it recognized the 301.

1. Yes sure. I dont see any issue with registering the domain with same company

2. Yes again

so now a days ranking #20 on google for 500 search keyword is considered great? not hating , just curious.

We are measuring the effect of the 301. Considering where was before that - yeah its great, not as position itself, but as movement up in the rankings.

I found a domain which expired from 2014 with many links from websites like wiki... Does this domain still have power?

Checked on Google?

Are you referring to Google Search Console?

Thanks!
no i meant simply search www.yourexpiredomain.com in Google.com. Google will reflect the 301

how can i know without looking it  wiki links doesn't matter anyway...(it may be after google recent statement about nofoll0w links)
check how many dofoll0w links it has and from which sites...are these sites authority in their niche? are they are strong sites with lots of traffic? if yes then you are good to go

is this domain based on DR/UR or DA/PA, and also i have couple domain that's don't get enough power, can i just redirect domain1.com to domain2.com and domain3.com to domain4.com and then just send backlink from domain2.com and domain4.com to our page that we want to rank for ?

and also, at this point, i don't understand :

Experiment Timeline:
Domains were redirected on single page https://www.mywebsite.co.uk/my-page.php

is that mean you redirect to page on your moneysite from root domain from your expired domain ? or you make page on your expired domain and redirect it to your moneysite ?

Conclusions:

  • 301 redirect is still working
  • You don't have to buy domains with hundreds of links.
  • Finding an expired domain with 2 or 3 high authority link is relatively easy..(i found hundreds of expired domain with a link from a top UK university)

Thanks for sharing this you are right, but one more hint from me ---> try to safe your money site and redirect with 301 to do custom /sitemap/ page

example: site . com/sitemap/ or site . com/site-map/ etc.. if you got penalized you will only for this one page not for all pages

1. These domains were selected based on their backlink from top authority sites.
2. Your experiment looks complicated but in theory it should work. I read somwhere that there is a limit to number of redirects when Google crawler stops goinf to next redirect.
3. I redirected the main expired domain on a page of my money website.

Apologies if this is a dumb question, but are you re-directing the exact page with the high quality backlink? Or the entire domain?

example:
expireddomain.com/my-niche/ has a link from BBC.

Re-create this exact page and point to money site?

Experiment Update:

here are the latest rankings for the same kws...

fQgllhK

Addition:
1. one more domain was redirected to the page

Conclusions:
1. As you can see after the initial boost, ranking went down for almost all keywords
2. There was an Google update too
3. Expired domains do help in rankings but i think it would need a domain with high number quality links rather than only 2 or 3 links
