I think this will benefit larger companies that are able to comply but really crush startups and entrepreneurs who do not have the money or resources to comply. It's a sad day for the EU.

Beyond this, it seems like the EU is pulling further and further away from the rest of the world with this law, the GDPR, and its antitrust actions against Facebook / Google. At this point it might as well create its own Internet.
 
EU expects youtube, reddit, etc... to implement a filter to automatically detected copyright material when it's uploaded. This is simply not possible ( and if it is somehow implemented, huge number of false positives will occur). Just look at YouTube copyright system and what a mess it is.

I believe the major players might just restrict huge amount of content from EU (atleast in the beginning) but the EU is a major market, so simply cutting off all content isn't viable. I am intrested in seeing where the EU is headed and if they might regret this dession in a year or two.
 
Does the non-waivable licensing fee for links apply to non-EU based news sites that are shown to users in the EU?

Gdpr is now just a footer strip cookie consent on website, I believe article 13 will meet same fate.
 
Bet Brexit will get pushed back just enough to the UK ends up with this crap on its lap as well... The entire thing is one step closer to trying to regulate the net you can see in the "media" how online services get blamed for one thing or another, it all goes quiet 1 week. Then the next something is live streamed, or someone filmed/said something online or some game telling kids to hurt them selfs, or revenge porn OR anything to make the internet look bad and convince the sheep that letting the government control your internet is the way to go.

200 000 people on the streets, 5 000 000 signing a petition and they still don't care....it's so sad.
 
It's got to be ratified and even if that does happen, there'll be 2 years before it's implemented, which will give any of the huge companies chance to take legal action etc.


Let's try to avoid the political aspect in here though.
 
I don't know how much it was discussed in your country, but here in Germany the new regulation is debated as the end of the free internet as we know it. There was a HUGE discussion the last months, 200000 people demonstrated against it, 5mil signed a petition https://savetheinternet.info . Article 13 (now 17) is about copyright and makes YouTube, FB, IG etc. liable when users upload copyrighted material in any way. That means they'll implement upload filters to block any content that MIGHT be copyrighted in any way. Though everybody knows it's technically not possible to make these upload filters to work precise. This could be the end to many YouTubers, memes, parodies etc as they will be blocked before publishing as the algorithms may see copyright violations in them.

Today the EU parliament voted FOR the regulation... This is a sad day for the internet and I'm not proud to be an EU citizen today...

My bad!

Not sure, time flies... I think they still got to get it through minus any changes they may or make not make along the way, but I think it's going to happen I mean that porn filter kicks in next month I think and that slid through the radar for most.
 
This is terrible.

The Internet is becoming a tightly controlled environment like limited online offerings from the 1980's where you could only do what they wanted you to do.

In the 1990's anyone could get in the Internet and work, it was truly free (as in freedom).

Now you're controlled by half a dozen companies. With all these stupid rules it's gonna get even more controlled.

These rules are meant to block competition, disguised as something else.

If you compete against a big guy they'll simply call their legal dept and crush you. If your competitor has friends in high places, they'll make a phone call and destroy you.

This is one more step towards the end. The WWW the older of us knew is dying right in front of us.
 
I've read about it and can't see how can it be implemented.
