Blogging about Alcoholism

I had an idea of starting a blog about alcoholism. As an ex-addict I think I have much experience with this and I was planning on writing personal stories as well as advice - how to quit, what methods that are available to someone suffering from alcoholism.

I have started blogs in the past but mostly vanity kind of things. For this blog I wanted to make money from it. From what I understand blogs about addiction is quite a good niche subject to have for a blog - it loosely comes under health which is a huge niche.

My questions are:

How can I make money from doing something like this? I have read that digital products are good. I am guessing that means that I should write guides or how to books based on giving up drinking. I can't think of other digital products that I could sell from a site like this.

I plan to do all the writing myself. Or should I find other writers to add content? I enjoy writing and I feel that I could write a ton of content on the subject of alcohol addiction.

How to get the site noticed? Social media presence? Get backlinks by commenting or guest blogging on other sites?

Would affiliate marketing be a useful source of income? I have also read that this is not as profitable as offering digital products.

I am thinking that I could write the blog, ad as much content as I can, and also write some small guidebooks on alcohol addiction (maybe around 15,000 words each) and offer those for sale on Amazon and link to those from the site. Does this sound like it could work?

What other methods could I use to profit from a site like this?

Is my general idea flawed in any way?

Do your blog and write about your last lfe...

Add not only books - think about herbals in pills - this is your target.
I don’t know a lot about that stuff but something like gozu / gogu mashrooms etc. Can work in this niche.

When you will do first texts them start linking... that’s it.

You can get products from amazon as an amazon affiliate or make your own product and try to sell it.

SEO, Youtube, Social media, many methods here, search it up. In the end it doesn't matter as long as it's working.

Focus on the content first, money will come later.

I would start with Facebook Instant Articles, you'll also be able to create a facebook group.

First of all what is your priority here?

Are you wanting to help people who have fallen or falling into this situation or are you wanting the main focus to make money from their addiction?

I think if you start the blog and build it up naturally then you can look to put ads on and make money that way.
Yes you're correct addictio and health are evergreen topics but there's a lot of sites / blogs out there, the majority of which are utter garbage with no real information just Adsense and the like.

If your experiences are written, people will come. They will share links to you and other will come.

Be different = offer value !

In the past I have written many short stories/articles about my experience when I was drinking all the time. I hope to add this kind of content to my blog as I think other people with alcohol issues could relate to it and hopefully gain some insight of their own future.

I think first and foremost I should be advising people. That should be my main priority. That said, I also hope to make money from it. I think MisterF makes an extremely valuable point of my intentions of writing this blog. If I make it too much of a website that is there just to sell things then people will see straight through it.

But I feel buzzed from all the answers and highly motivated to get started.

It's a good thing that being an ex addict, you know a lot about alcoholism and you can actually write some good quality blogs on it.

Actually I am wondering if I should avoid making it too personal. Maybe personal stories of addiction are interesting to read but I think I would have to write it in such a way that it provides some help or use to the reader.

For example, addicts often relapse when they are attempting to give up drugs or alcohol in the beginning. I don't think there are many people that give up successfully the first time. I could write about my attempts to stop drinking but then write about the relapses. This could be a very personal account but at the same time provide a valuable source of information to other addicts.

It's all in the way it is written I suppose. I think it would be unwise to write the personal account from a 'seedy glamour' point of view, but I also think that it shows a lot of experience with the subject rather than a series of articles that are just very basic 'how to' guides.

Definitely something for me to think about.

I think you will build an authority site along the way, one of problems you may face is the high competition of this niche, because its in health sub-niche, very hard to rank.

Yes, there is a massive amount of competition. I have discovered some websites on addiction that have been created by a team of freelance writers. I guess it is a very lucrative niche market.

Keyword research in this will be your friend.

I had a site about drug and alcohol addiction that did very well (adsense site) and it targeted a lot of KWs that were not crazy to rank yet had decent searches.

Do your work to find those KWs if you are going to make this a commercial enterprise and target them in your content.
