Before building backlinks to your site, focus on getting your on-page seo right. Backlinks are secondary.
One should also try guest posting to gain backlinks.

starting writing asap and accruing articles as many as you can make in a week that are good quality and keep pushing it until you can start building up a little decent flow of daily consistent traffic
I think your confused because people have so many tactics it really comes down to which site their doing stuff on
for example your main money site (your baby) that you want to last forever and build into a brand and company dont do dumb risky black hat stuff if you dont know what your doing and jeapordize your baby
you see most people start sites that they dont care about if they get banned etc 0.99 for a domain and dirt cheap hosting and your good to go and test and do all the PBNS and all that stuff and buying links and mess around with that
youll learn how to do the black hat stuff right then maybe you use it for money site baby
if you dont know for certain on the black hat tricks and hacks and all that stuff
then stick with legit organic white hat stuff for the money baby site

Agreed. Too many people do half-assed on site SEO and quickly start throwing links around.
1) On site
2) Make sure you have good content
3) Keep adding fresh content on a regular basis
4) Create ACTIVE social accounts for the site
5) Then get links (no spam)
