I have been botting my dog's account for about a month now and have seen a rise in engagement and have doubled his followers

Well, yes it does damage engagement rate if aggressive settings are being used though it might work other way out if done conservatively.

If you've been using bot for long and would like to restore old engagement, stop botting and using hashtags, minimize the use of direct messaging/commenting, post real content/don't repost, have your engagement rate as high as possible by engaging with others.
