Would it be stupid to host from home?

Hey!

I've been thinking about hosting an adult website and it came to mind that with my server and computer experience I could do it from home, but then I got an afterthought... would it really be clever to host such a website from home?

I know already that it would risk my identity and so on, but should I really care? After all, I could just host it through a VPN.

What are your thoughts on this and has anybody any experience in this case?

I think its a big no no no for hosting an adult site on your home pc, well also it depends on what kind of "adult" level it is i suppose, but i would rather go for an offshore hosting personally, better be safe than sorry, but thats just my opinion.

I doubt in your experience if you talk about hosting from home.
1. Its hardly doable.
2. Just no.
3. If you have any doubts take a look one line above.

If you want to keep your ass safe from anything that could happen because of hosting such website - look for VPS in Russia, Ukraine or somewhere where people dont care as long as you pay.

Well that's debatable but I can see why you are disagreeing, it was just a quick thought I realize now that it won't help :)

I don't see what's hardly doable? But yeah, as @Arontus and you mentioned, it would be better to do something offshore and be safe!

1. Internet connection - you cant really compare home internet connection to connection you have in datacenter (unless you have unmettered 1gbps line). Most home internet providers give bigger download than upload. In hosting world you need shitload of upload speed, download doesn't matter.
2. Ip address - mostly you wont get static IP so you can point domain to IP in DNS zone, there are ways around that but still its not something that is advised.
3. Power - you need to keep your PC powered on 24/7. Sure there are things like respberry, but porn may be high traffic site, raspberry wont handle such load. So lets say you have ultra low power PC that consumes only 50watt /hour. In my country such power usage would cost $~5 a month alone (we dont talk here about hardware, proper internet connection, only power usage). For $5 a month you can get good VPS powerfull enough to host site. Sometimes on sales like blackfriday and similar its possible to get small dedicated server for this price.

In short - from all points of view its bad idea.
You are trying to complicate your life with hosting any site on home PC.
 
Lol why you even consider that idea when you can get a vps for like 5$?
 
It's not a better idea. This will have to deal with a lot of problems. Not everything can be fixed by your ability. Easy to identify. If this is a normal website you can try it but don't want an adult site.

Thanks for elaborating but it was just an idea and wanted to start a discussion. Seems like I expressed myself wrong. I understand where you are coming from but all those 3 points are already paid for and ready to go in my daily life so adding a web server is not going to rack up any bill. It was just an idea and wanted to know what people thought and everybody here had to say. Now it seems like I was wrong and it wasn't a very fun thing to talk about pros and cons, seems to be mostly cons haha. But yeah, thanks again! :)
 
I have done this and don't recommend it unless you are in fort the long term and have the money to invest and upgrade as you go. You need the equipment and the dedicated line server etc. It is not cheap to do if you have decent traffic. Sometimes it's better to get a dedicated server and use thier equipment and pay for bandwidth as you go.
 
Except for the internet speed and electricity prices, and of course the hardware requirements, take note you cannot guarantee even 90% uptime as power shortage could happen more often in residential zones rather then server farms which has backups and generators. besides that, other then the possibility of unlawful content, you do have to secure your home properly to avoid break-ins, fire, etc. if the actual hardware is stolen or burns... well... bummer. anyway not recommended at all :D
 
Don't host anything yourself. Period.

Hosting is a utility, like running water. Did you run pipes from the lake in order to take a shower?

Also until you're hitting critical mass, whether you're hosting porn or bible phrases, don't spend more than 5 minutes thinking about hosting. Think about the product. Make hosting a problem when it becomes a problem.
 
Hosting is so cheap, and can scale as your website grows I really don't see the point personally.
 
I usually dont comment on adult hosting topics, but personally i am a hosting provider and working with different companies since 2011.
I believe the same that once it could be done in dc it can also be hosted from your home. But when i advanced my skills and started my own business. Bought collocations in DCs instead of hosting it at home, a LOT more factors involved rather than speed of internet and bills. so technically its possible practically i wont recommend
 
The only way I'd host from home is:

1) Super fast/stable connection (up and down)
2) Reverse proxy to hide my home IP (requires some technical knowledge)

As others said.. probably easier just to buy hosting. Besides, most ISPs have "no servers allowed" somewhere in the fine print.
