Hello BHW. I wanted to compile a brief list of WordPress plugins that have helped me out in various ways. Feel free to add to this list, and if you find it helpful.. well, that's the point. :)

Most of the names are self-descriptive, but you can gain more clarification by doing a quick Google search, or do a search for the plugin from the backend of your WordPress site.

nice list, i use almost the same ones.

Do you know any good article rewriter for wordpress? I know one or two, but they suck!
 
This is what I mostly use for my blog:

  • Akismet: Best way in the world to protect your blog from comment and track-back spam. It keeps your site protected from spam even while you sleep.
  • Better Tag cloud: A Better Tag Cloud than the default one. Really looks nicer than the initial one.
  • Facebook comments for WordPress: Allows visitors to comment on posts using their Facebook profile. That's good for getting traffic from our two social sites.
  • Facebook Like: Adds the new Facebook Like button and Facebook Recommendations widget to our blog. Cool for traffic later on.
  • Google Analytics for WordPress: This plugin makes it simple to add Google Analytics to the WordPress blog, adding lots of features, eg. custom variables and automatic clickout and download tracking. I'm a GA addict.
  • Network Publisher: Automatically publishes our blog posts to Social Networks including Twitter and Facebook Pages that we use.
  • Platinum SEO Pack: Complete SEO solution for our WordPress blog. We surely want to be optimised for search.
  • Share and Follow: A simple plugin to manage sharing and following. And the Follow solution is soooo coool! We linked it to our Twitter and Facebook pages.
  • Smart Youtube: Inserts YouTube videos in posts, comments and RSS feeds with ease and full customization.
  • Visitor Maps and Who's Online: Displays Visitor Maps with location pins, city, and country. Includes a Who's Online Sidebar to show how many users are online. It's so cute to see who is watching your blog at any moment :)
  • WordPress Facebook Fan Box Widget: Displays our page's Facebook fan box as widget in our blog.
  • WP-Crontrol: WP-Crontrol lets you take control over what's happening in the WP-Cron system.
  • AdSense Integrator
  • Add Local Avatar
 
I also use most of them. Also try Digg-Digg, it's the best plugin for social sharing IMO

What is better? Akismet or Antispam?
 
Nice list, try to install WP Touch for smartphones..
 
If you count on Google Images traffic then add Frame Buster.

That's actually a nice list, but how is WP Unique working for you - I've had people give mixed reviews about it.

I use:
  1. Akismet: Anti-spam, most people know
  2. Disqus: Great commenting system
  3. Pti's Text-Math Antispam: Simple math before posts helps stop spammers
  4. SEO Ultimate: Great SEO package, tons of options for meta tags, title, slug, etc.
  5. Twitter Tools: Used for automatically sharing my tweets <-> WP
  6. Ultimate Google Analytics: Solid GA package
 
I really like the SEO in the Headway theme. Or use All In One SEO on sites without Headway.

I'm surprised to not see any backup-type plugins on the list. No one is backing up their sites? I'm looking for a good free backup solution as we speak and would be interested to hear how everyone handles that issue for important sites...

Nah i do back ups by the cpanel :P

and yeah even wp-DB back up some times.
