Why stay away from WordPress

There are millions of sites running on wordpress.

There is nothing wrong with using wordpress. It is just that when something reaches this level of popularity, there are bound to be quite a lot of people misusing it. Same with wordpress. It works great for those who know how to use it right. I rank wordpress sites with the default theme (custom header) just fine without any problem.

what are some alternatives than ?

I've built dozens of sites for clients using Wordpress and I provide search engine optimization for many of them. I've never had any issue with doing well in Google with a Wordpress site.

Serious websites use static HTML or Drupal CMS

I laugh and roll my eyes when I see web design companies advertising for Wordpress site designers

My Wordpress sites do great. Most people just don't know how to optimize them properly.

*rolls eyes* Google does NOT hate WordPress.

Joomla, from a user friendly point of view, seriously sucks. There are plenty of other CMS alternatives out there however. These include:

- Expression Engine
- Drupal
- Square space
- Kirby
- Business Catalyst

ExpressionEngine and Drupal are commonly used in government related websites.

Thanks for sharing. I don't like wordpress as it is too heavy but it is good for build a group of blog sites for link building.

Google has banned websites before because they used scripts that were open to exploits. This is proven and documented well. Making your WP site look like it is unique is a good idea to avoid a possible script penalty, but I doubt people will be able to hide WP or plugins since the engine has many foot prints.

How many governments can actually spell WordPress? But seriously folks, marketing and ignorance is the reason why governments prefer Drupal; sort of like choosing Apple products instead of Android or Linux. From a article in FCW.com:

According to Balter's analysis, WordPress is in a distant second place in the .gov domain. WordPress is used by the Health and Human Services Department, Consumer Protection Agency, Commerce Department, and several others. Both Drupal and WordPress are open source content management systems.

Balter and other experts are questioning the basis of Drupal's skyrocketing popularity for government and wondering why WordPress is falling behind.

"When you stack the two side by side (or against any other CMS for that matter), WordPress is objectively the prudent choice," Balter wrote. "On paper, you'd be hard-pressed to make the case for anything else. But, it's not a technical problem. It's a human one. It seems that WordPress's greatest asset - ease of use that has resulted in widespread adoption by a largely non-technical user base - is threatening to become its greatest liability."

For government purchasers, Balter suggests, WordPress may be suffering from an image problem.

"Among those empowered to make purchasing decisions, there seems to be a sense that WordPress is what you use on the weekends to post pictures of your lunch while Drupal is what you use for 'serious' business," he added.

Balter also said marketing by Drupal to government clients may be a factor. Other experts also have questioned the disparity, suggesting that while WordPress is lower in cost and effective, more organizations want to follow the example of the White House and use Drupal.

Ok, I understand everybody's point, but why nobody can post a custom .htaccess and a custom robots.txt that can help those who are using wordpress? For example you can post a robots.txt with the common files from wordpress that should not be indexed. That will help us all. Thanks!

Wp is great if you need a quick website to begin promoting your product, not sure if i agree that google doesn't like Wp sites.

I use both Blogger AND WordPress.Still IM newbie here....

I've used wordpress for a ton of my websiites and have never had a problem...wordpress is brilliant and pages get indexed quickly on google and bing.....................................................................(W O R D P R E S S IS DA S H I T !)

One of the OP's issues could be addressed by running an HTML code cleaner / obfuscator across all your source files.

At least you could remove the comments.

Keep the master source files running on a development server though, so it's easy to keep making modifications.

But before publishing to your live server, run all the source files through something that strips out comments and mashes up the HTML code to be slightly different.

Not sure what tool actually does this, but my life as a programmer intuitively tells me that something like this would surely exist.

That makes no fucking sense whatsoever. I know of plenty of serious sites that use wordpress.


Wordpress can be as complicated as raw HTML and css... it essentially is, it's just user friendly, and there are a ton of bots for it. How the f_ck is this thread getting any attention? You could manually code your content in, sure. But why, when you can use wordpress? THERE IS SOOOOO MUCH you can do with wordpress, it's incredible.

The only person who would say wordpress is dead, or is a joke, is someone who doesn't know what they're doing.
