I have talked to an old friend with a small channel. An he confirmed today that he does make money. Well not much compared to big youtubers but it is somewhat close to my estimation. Guess what everyone time to get to work.
its really true that they make money, and there are some that makes millions every year... for example if you go to socialblade and type the smosh channel you will see he makes a minimum of 2k a day (thats with the LOWEST epc) and a maximu of 20 -50k a day

How epc is calculated? based on viewers of the country or based on theme of the video?

Well, this thread was the ice breaker. I have always wanted to start my own channel, but always wondered if it's worth a risk. I have lots of video ideas, a decent camera and now i have this feeling which makes me want to create videos. Thanks for starting this thread, OP. ^^ for example, channel HowToBasic. That guy is making fun of the food, but he only invests in some cheap stuff to smash and after each video he has to clean up the mess, but every video generates at least 2k USD. It is just an estimate and only from the views/ads. What is more intriguing, all the famous youtubers have multiple channels, multiple merchandise items, websites with traffic and additional bonus ads...
Is there any company or website working out to find/search youtube channels and try to convert them as YT partners?
Great to hear majinn! . What we need is a unique and catchy idea. And please remember this, channels can take more then 6 month to get going so please don't give up. If you upload on a weekly basis and you know that your content is worth the viewers time I am sure you will be successful.
As I said I will be creating a journey thread about this soon since this topic is still a bit blurry around here. Hopefuly it will be an exciting journey but for sure a long one.

but yeah the top youtubers make shitloads of money
and the 100k subscriber ones can also make a semi-decent living.

He means like VEVO, or Machinima channel groups/companies. They search for popular youtubers and connect them to one massive channel with differently named episodes of each creator

As a Machinima Partner/Director it's really hard to estimate someone's exact earnings. Different networks provide different CPM's, mobile views don't count on a lot of networks, obviously the YouTube view count, and the ad-view count differs extremely! Ad-View count in my experience has always been much lower. I've looked at my earnings on social blade and it's funny how general they make my possible earnings. They really have no idea.
Please don't underestimate the amount of money put into videos now days, production costs do exist with the more popular YouTubers. YouTube revenue isn't their profit.

Ok so here's how YouTube works as I understand it. I'm not big headed enough to call myself an expert... But I threw out my TV in 2011 and began watching YouTube as my main source of TV entertainment (and streaming the odd TV show occasionally). Three ways a youtuber can make money:
- Independent
- Network
- YouTube Partner
Independent
These are the ones that post a load of low quality videos and get paid through adsense showing before or in the video. This is the hardest way to make money, but it's the main way that most successful YouTubers start out.
Network
Networks (such as Revision3) will get people who are struggling to get approved as a YT Partner and want to get their name out. So they sign up to receive a percentage of what the Network makes from their videos. The Network is a YT partner. There are a few low quality Networks that accept a lot of BlackHat/ IM guys, so a Google search will probably bring up some of those.
YouTube Partners
Everyone pretty much knows about this. You make a few great videos. Get a shit ton of subscribers. You should do REALLY well on YT before you apply to be a YT Partner. Sometimes someone from YT will contact you if you are good enough. If not, just make sure you are doing REALLY GOOD and just apply. I think you can only apply once every 3 or so months (or at least it used to be that way) so that's why your channel should be REALLY GOOD before you apply. If you get accepted, they send you the details... Give you a tshirt... Start paying you PER VIEWS!
So that's it. You can definitely make a living from YT. You just have to be ENTERTAINING!
As per the agreement that you will sign when you become a YT Partner, you are NOT allowed to say how much you make. This is basically because they pay different YT Partners different amounts.
TLDR: YouTube makes YT Partners sign an agreement not to share how much each partner makes.
