I was raised eating vegetables and rice (Indian diet). No meat was ever made at home, but I did have it outside of the home very rarely.
Now I have moved to a less carbs (no pasta / bread, only brown rice) and a higher meat diet (same amount of vegetables as before - a lot). I usually eat more fish and eggs rather than chicken or red meat.
There are advantages to every type of diet. You don't need meat to live and you don't need tons of complex carbs either. One of the best MMA fighters in the world eats no diary and no meat, but only vegetables and grains.
The only rule, in my opinion, is to make sure that you are spending the money to get organic, grass-fed, meat. It's more expensive, but think of it as investing in your future (less medical bills, more productive, less pain etc.)
