I used to be a vegetarian for 7 years when I was younger , I stopped because of a medical issue that I had at that time. And I must admit that I got used to it and didn't really thought about quitting again since. I really love animals , always did , I even have a dog which I love more then life itself and thinking about taking another one.

A few days ago a friend of mine (who is vegetarian) asked me "If you love animals so much why do you still eat meat ?"
I'm actually thinking about this question ever since .

What is your opinion about it ? is there any veges in here?

If you love plants so much why do you eat them. It is not a question of ethics or morality, it is about what you like to eat. As long as you are not eating an animal or plant of an endangered species or a human it is ok.

Frankly the holier than thou attitude of vegans and vegetarians pisses me off. Who are they to judge people ? And does giving up meat make you a better person? I think not.

If it is about non violence then thats another pile of BS since plants have life too and eating plants is violence against them.

If you enjoy eating meat , please carry on.

Dude loving animals and eating meat is completely different. In the law of ecosystem, we must survive and they must too. But I dont think cows and goats will go extinct pretty fast. :D

I am a vegetarian and I have nothing against non vegetarians and I agree with with seonetic that it's just they way the food chain works. But sometimes we take the power we yield as humans too far.

If you have to kill animals then take good take care of them when they are alive and kill them off with one stroke and make it as painless as you can. Packing up 100 chicken (or any other animal) in a small 4x4, making them dangle by their legs, growing them in a certain artificial way while causing them pain just so we can eat delicious food, halal killing etc. is certainly wrong.

Lots of vegans and vegetarians (including me) are so not because they don't like to kill animals. It's because of we desist the way we humans sometimes treat them like as if we are gods and they have no right to live comfortably with us. Treat them with respect and before you eat an animal, thank it and try and understand what a huge sacrifice it has done just so you can have food on your plate. Don't be a heartless cold-blooded killer. If you can be conscious of your role in the ecosystem then there's no problem with non-vegetarianism.

Something like what Zoe Saldana does in Avatar.

Plants dont have feelings, so animals are not comparable in that way.

Also its not a holier then thou attitude, its that when you see suffering, one would like to shed light on it.

OP's friend makes a good point, but maybe should have rephrased the question to be more gentle I think

I eat a lot of vegetables and fuit, I'd say my diet is quite healthy compared to the average, but I don't see a reason why shouldnt I enjoy a nice steak or something from time to time. Being strictly vegetarian is weird imho.

vegan here, the health benefits of living a vegan lifestyle are too many to list. In todays world, with everybody fighting to make a buck, the food that you eat might be compromised.

We wouldn't be here if our ancestors were eating plants. I love animals, but I eat meat on the daily basis. One of the best tasting protein, why the hell should I say no to that?

If we don´t kill animals off they would become to much in the world, and why then throw away the meat, that works perfectly well as food?

This. I once read in a book, here is a quote:

"Kill neither man or beast, nor the food that goes into your mouth. For if you eat living food, the same will quicken you.. But if you kill your food, the dead food will kill you also. For life comes only from life, and from death comes always death."

Antibiotics, growth hormones, injections, lab generated animals, average chicken life of a few weeks, are just some reasons why I try to eat as much organic fresh foods as possible. The feelings/hormones secreted when the animal is being killed, contaminates the food in my opinion. Although, sometimes I do treat myself to meat when I have no other options.

Here are some more of my opinions. Protein is way overrated, and exaggerated. Protein is super hard to digest, and today in America, the diet is so bad. People are like protein protein protein. Well, some of the largest animals on earth hardly get any protein. For example, horses, elephants, donkeys, giraffes, camels, all feed on mainly grass and other organic foods. Their metabolisms are super fast because they eat easily digested foods, and they probably shit like 5-10 times a day. Many people with bad diets don't even shit once a day. A strong digestion/metabolism is very important to overall good health, and meat is one of the hardest things to digest, unlike fruits, vegetables, and nuts and seeds.

Just throwing my thoughts out there.

The question is silly - First of all you don't love all animals on the planet, you love the ones you know and care about (your dog). Ask him back, "if he loves people, why doesn't he work in Africa helping children?" :D

Then, it 's nature. If humans weren't supposed to eat meat, they 'd have the digestive system of a sheep.

Too many people too, but you don't see me going to a day care with a fork and bbq sauce. Omnivore btw, I can see the health benefits of both and try to balance it.

I'm a Pescatarian myself (fish only), but it's not for consideration of the animals, it's for my health. My family has a history of heart disease and red meat is the #1 accelerator of heart disease. It's a wise choice to consider cutting back on your red meat any way you spin it.

    Couple documentaries to checkout:
