Too many backlinks per day ?!

Too many backlinks too quickly will get you into trouble. You don't want to overdo backlinks because they will penalize you. Go slowly. I've never been penalized but I only create 3-5 backlinks every 3-5 days. There are other methods of getting indexed.
If it's a new site 30-50 a week max for a few weeks is about the most you should do. Build the links manually and you should be ok. Things like directories take differing amouns of time to appear. If your site has any pr or is over a year old you can build far more than you could do manually.
There is a very good thread on here by micallef called the supercharged backlink experiment take a look at that. He is doing an experiment on a new site with heavy backlinking. If you are unfortunate enough to get "sandboxed" keep the backlink building going.

apparently you don't get it. the more backlinks the better, but the part that gets you in trouble is how fast you build them.

It depends also on the quality of backlinks. If you have high quality backlinks (and many, even in short time) you will never be sandboxed.
