I'm a bit late on the boat with this one I think. A few of the site I work have have take drops in the last 2-3 days. I know there is talk about a new possible update, but I actually missed the December updates because I saw not movements and was preparing for the new year.
After reading the spam update message in Search Console, I'm even more confused. I feel like my sites, where I've used guest blog tactics and seen a good boost, have dropped. However, in my industry there are hundreds of directories pumping links out to everyone and they are now at the top of Google. These sites have millions of links, some guest blogs and link to 1000s of other websites. Its hard to understand at this point. So, I've got a few thoughts. i'd like to see if anyone agrees or disagrees with me.
I have a few opinions on the matter moving forward:
- Links on forum threads, not forum profiles, are going to be one of the biggest boost to rankings (Sadly there about 2 forums in my industry).
- Paid adverts for links are pointless unless you are getting referral traffic. From an SEO point of view your just running the risk of AI picking you up as spammy and rel-"sponsored" tags make the links pointless
- Websites that were spammy previously maybe 4-5 years ago and got away with the tactic, have slipped the net and as long as they don't continue to spam they will always have an advantage.
