I wouldn't make the switch unless you have a touchscreen. Otherwise, it'll make things a bit more convenient but not enough to be worth the hassle or expense, in my opinion.
I used Win 8 for a year on my old laptop. It provided a few new tools and switching between programs was a bit more convenient, but nothing major. The screen shattered and I spent three weeks using my hub's laptop with Win 7 -- not a big change. He bought me a new laptop a few days ago (thank you, sweetie!) ... I'm using the touchscreen a lot more than I thought I would, and Windows 8.1 is turning out to be a lot more functional because of it.
