Switch from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 - Worth it?

Thsi windpw 8 is useless I bought computer last year with window 8 the interface is goods for playing games for kids but it slows down work rate significantely I would not recomend any body to use it.
 
Hmm you guys make it hard to make a decision :) There's pros and cons for Windows 8.1.... Currently I'm facing performance issues with my Windows 7. When I reformat it, it takes me like 1-2 months until my system starts becoming slow. And I know what I'm doing as I am using Windows since 98. No matter what processes I kill and close, the problem won't stop. The slow booting process is really starting to annoy me. Guess I'll upgrade to Windows 8.1 soon.
 
I switched from windows 7 to windows 8 only to use the windows 7 mode.....i would stick with 7.
 
My own take is that Windows 8 is fairly bad. Most of the hardware industry is blaming Microsoft and Windows 8 for the decline in PC sales. The Metro interface is not acceptable to most people.

Windows 8.1 is superior to Windows 8. If you install Classic Shell (free) or Start 8 ($5.00) then you get the start menu back. However, you still do not have windowed operation; all applications function in full screen, making multi tasking more difficult. You over come this by installing ModernMix ($5.00 same company that writes Start 8).

With these two programs you now have a functional desk/lap top. However, you do not have the Aero effects of Win 7. To get the Aero effect, you install WinGlass (free).

Un/fortunately, Windows media player will not play DVD's, even with the proper codex installed. To correct this feature/failure you have to install an after market video player. I have been installing VLC.

Windows 8 is in almost constant communication with a number of servers and runs an unholy number of processes, so you have to run through the services and programs to shut down the unnecessary processes.

Then you have a functional box.

For me, it is an easy $50 to do the above work because I script it with Power Shell.

Win 8.1 is actually far superior to Win 7 once you work the bugs out, but I prefer Win 7.

Rumor has it that MicroSoft will be putting the Start Menu back in in Windows 8.2 and correcting some of the other problems.

I would wait until Win 8.2, or perhaps Windows 9.

What are you doing? I have never had performance issues with Win 7. I run CCleaner once in a while, and Glary utilities.
 
I can just tell you I'm enjoying it pretty much :D
But if you plan on GAMING hard, and you don't have a lot of knowledge on PCs, then don't. I had some problems playing games like: GTA IV, Call of Duty series, Assassin's Creed, etc... but everything is Fixable. Or maybe updates will be out soon, so you won't have to go trough that..

Aside that, everything is Like win7, but with more options :D

Woaaah... these are some heavy arguments against Windows 8.1!!
I didn't know you had to install like 5 addons just to make it look and feel like Windows 7.
Hmmm... now I'm unsure... I don't see a reason upgrading now...
 
I just got a new hp notebook that has win 8.1 on itt. Honestly I am still getting used to it. Though the titles are extremely annoying. I may take the notebook back to the store and use my old machine with win 7.
 
I would say stay with windows 7, I have a laptop with 8, but currently all the things i can do with 7 i can do with 8, so there is no point of switching if you already have 7

Now just use it like Windows 7 and know that at least you will buy yourself 3 more years of updates with 8. Since 7 will be deprecated in 2020 and 8 in 2023 - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/lifecycle

The first hour with Windows 8.1 you will want to throw the computer through something (I know I almost did) but seriously install Classic Shell and it's way better.
 
Windows 9 will be released next year. I would hold out until then.

Post your system specs as there might be other reasons that your system is running slow.
 
I did an upgrade from 7 to 8.1. Not willingly at first, it was the only OS I had available to me at the time.

While I don't think Win8 is as bad as some people say, it definitely takes some getting used to, and there are no major improvements I can see from Windows 7.

In other words, don't fix what ain't broke. Windows 7 is great. Stick with it for a while dude.
 
I should add that if you don't need to switch then stick with 7. The only reason I switched is because all new computers come with 8 and I bought a new laptop recently. So in that case it's not worth it to me to buy 7 again. But don't upgrade to 8 just to do it - don't waste your money.
 
Windows 8.1 is good, windows 8 sux .
Windows 7 is good too.

Without touchscreen windows 8.1 is just so so, but it has an App Store which u can download apps. For me it works great for me (But then its not my main computer, my main is a mac =) )

Just go test it out, its good, but whether you can adapt to the new interface is another question.
 
I happily used windows 8 for about half a year until my SSD became corrupted in some way and I had to reinstall my OS. I made the stupid mistake of installing windows 8.1 this time, and it was an absolutely horrible experience. I use the start menu to search for every program I use, it's just so easy to type a few characters of the name and press enter. I tried two different applications which were supposed to give the same feel of the old start menu, but these just didn't cut it at all. I can't remember what exactly bothered me, but it certainly made me go back to windows 7 before a day had went by. Also the metro view is just plain stupid in my opinion. I don't want the interface of a phone on my computer, I just want a start menu and a desktop. Though the time it takes for your computer to boot with windows 8 is great! Especially on a SSD harddrive.
