I actually teach guitar, bass and drums for a living. You want to start with basic exercises that get you playing frets (1,2,3,4 on each string).
If you wanna skip some boring stages go straight to learning the following chords (only do 1 or 2 at a time to start): A, C, D, E, Em, G
Once you have these and can play a couple of songs using them start on F, Bm and then bar chords - learn the major and minor shapes when the root is on E and then on A string.
Once you have them you can start on 7th chords (dominant, major and minor 7ths).
That's a real rough guide, and you also have to learn proper strumming but it's something to follow.
Some students have been playing songs within a couple of weeks or less, others take longer. Practice makes perfect!
