I want to be able to play some songs on a guitar (acoustic). Maybe 20 or so party songs.

So how long would it take to learn all the chords and notes and whatever?

I am a beginner and starting completely from scratch.

    Practice is the key!
Practicing chords 2 hours a day for 30 days would make you comfortable on the strings. Then you can learn any song

I practiced with the help of ultimate-guitar.com and covers on YT.

    Worked pretty well :)

6 months of practice for chords to be real good and play any song you may find on net. For heavy metal you need much more practice.

In the beginning, it helps to have a good, inspiring teacher.
After spending a year with a good teacher, you can learn
on your own - but only if you have an 'ear' for music. There
are some unfortunate individuals who will never learn - even
with the best teacher in the world. They just don't have
the aptitude to become a musician.

    Cheers! - "Wiz"

impressing girls with guitar is actually all about your voice.

to work a crowd and get laid, you have to be able to sing whilst you play.

i'm an absolute expert on guitar game. ;)

I actually teach guitar, bass and drums for a living. You want to start with basic exercises that get you playing frets (1,2,3,4 on each string).
If you wanna skip some boring stages go straight to learning the following chords (only do 1 or 2 at a time to start): A, C, D, E, Em, G

Once you have these and can play a couple of songs using them start on F, Bm and then bar chords - learn the major and minor shapes when the root is on E and then on A string.

Once you have them you can start on 7th chords (dominant, major and minor 7ths).

That's a real rough guide, and you also have to learn proper strumming but it's something to follow.

Some students have been playing songs within a couple of weeks or less, others take longer. Practice makes perfect!

    BlackMa,

When you're just starting out, it's a bit frustrating. Your fingertips are going to get sore but if you keep at it, you'll soon get the hang of it. One advice: Don't hurry, take your time.

There are so many resources on the net, it's ridiculous. Just look for tabs or tablatures of the songs you wanna learn on google. When I started there was no internet, lol.

Although it's unrelated to the OP,check out these guys. It always puts a smile on my face :D

How much time are you willing to put into it? Usually when people start asking how much effort you need for something or how much time something takes, they will never make it. Just looking at all the people I've coached IM in the past.

You need to forget about your target. Enjoy the process of practising. Keep on practising. Give it 100% and you will get there in your own time. Because if you enjoy it, who cares how long it takes you.

If you start looking at your practise sessions as some sort of boring crap you need to endure for half a year and then see not much progress after 2 weeks of practising you will discount your long term target for short term inconvenience and drop it.
