one of my client wish to host his domain on two different hosting servers with two different companies. being noob on hosting stuff, I wonder if it is possible to host single domain on two different servers with two different companies without changing anything on domain?

why does he to do that?

you can register a domain with one hosting, and have the files hosted on another hosting, you will need to change the dns on the domain.

you cant have the same domain registered with 2 different hosting

well I am still confuse as my client is still insisting to have his domain on two different hosting accounts. I don't know but I believe he has learnt that it is possible from his other friends. I know one domain can be pointed to one DNS service while hosting. but still don't know if it can be added on two different hosting accounts, if added more DNS services of different hosting companies on it.

Why don't you ask him what exactly it is he want's to achieve?
Then explain to him the technicalities.

he is very much concern on his online business, he is afraid of downtime on hosting. I have already explained him the technicalities I knew... but.. he still insists on having two different hosting accounts. I thought I must ask this to BHW community if there is any solution of it.

If it's a static site you could have the files on both hosting providers, keep them up to date, then point the dns to one, but if it ever went down, dns could be changed to point to the other.

also, I beleive there might be a way - called round robin I think? That you can have it automatically fail over to the other host if te first becomes unavailable.

but if it's a database driven site then this wouldn't work.

i think you can also get high availability SQL clustering systems so if he wanted to spend a lot of money I'm sure you could build a failover / load balancing system based on those technologies.

lastly, might be worth introducing him to cloudflare - I'm sure that their enterprise packages offer 100% uptime guarantee through means of cached delivery on failure.

If your client don't know much about hosting stuff then register a domain on a hosting provider and host files on another and told him that his domain name is hosted with another provider and files are hosted on another. two hosting one website

why doesn't he uses a cloud hosting ? use rackspace or any other premium service, on shard account you can't achive this.

Not sure about 2 vps servers in 2 locations... with a custom script that checks if the server is online or not...

But your best bet is cloud, use it and he will have 99% uptime, higher that that no company can guarantee ;)

Or a cloudflare's always online. you'll achive the same thing

don't know how to tell my client he is sufficient on his hosting plans but he still insists having two different companies. don't know who the hell told him to get two different hosting companies and it is possible. I had tried to explain him all possible solutions and technical limitations came in my mind. when everything fail, I thought better ask this to my BHW mates.

cloud hosting or same similar service will do the work and protect him against down time, which happen very rare with good hosting, if he is that much paranoiac you can offer him to build server at home, beside his bed, or better two servers in case if one is down + he will need generator in case if there is electricity problems and both must be hidden in huge safe box against physicall Attack

There must be a away to use one server as a backup server, but if he plans to run a blog or another site where he or the users will constantly add new data to, it's rather difficult.

You should ask him why does he think it's a good idea to use 2 different hosting accounts for one domain. I'm sure he wants to do it to use one as a backup server. Tell him that if you go with a reliable host like BlueHost, that's not necessary.

Wonder what type of website you client have? a blog/forum/eCommerce/WP/joomla/...??
What is the purpose for them to have it in 2 hostings - fail-safe / load-balance / security ? (a good Cloud Hosting or Cluster should do it)
or they want to separate functions (file-hosting, blog/forum...) into separate sub-domains?
