Shoutout Scam

I just had a thing happen to me and it made me think, does PayPal ever side with the seller not the buyer in a shoutout Purchase? Long story short someone bought a shoutout from me with post+story+bio link and half way through it they dispute because they made no sale and my traffic sucks, nothing to do with his shitty shopify website, OBVIOUSLY.

Considering that an instagram shoutout is not an official service I assume that PayPal will always side with the buyer in case of a dispute.

If that's the case What's stopping someone from going on a buying spree one day to 20 1m+ accounts, get a shit ton of traffic with retargeting potential and then dispute all of them halfway through because 'I forgot to put my tracking, I need a refund'

IS there no way to protect ourselves?

You said it all the way... Yes, make your buyers know your story, and force them to write a no refund message upon payment. Or get a Payoneer card and pull your money once you get paid. Get few cards if you have ongoing orders from others, try to force everyone to add not refundable payment for services, etc, note when paying. Should be good.
 
You need to get off of PayPal. I don't understand why people still use PayPal, especially a member from 2011. You should have been burnt long before this to learn your lesson.

Get on Stripe and write a damn terms of service policy.

Problem solve. Register a LLC in a first world country, get a bank account there under that company, set it up. If you can't handle that, JV with someone you trust in a first world country. You're just feeding yourself excuses. Take accountability and don't place blame on anything but yourself.

First world country? Be careful. Stripe is ignoring half of European Union. For example, even my poor Poland was noted in New York's Wall Street as first world country.

But Stripe will change it or will pay huge fees. New law entered to European Union, if you offer something to one euro country, you need it to have in all countries, or hundreds of millions fees.
Law entered yesterday, enjoy US services ;)

No, I am not trying but not suggest that countries not accepted by Stripe are 2nd or 3rd world countries ;)
 
Opening an LLC on a different continent to deal with 100$ worth of disputes seems a bit over kill but thanks for the suggestion.

Oh I thought this was a bigger business. If it's only $100 then I wouldn't sink time into this any further and just move forward.
 
The biggest factor in PayPal purchases is "Friends and Family" vs "Goods and Services" payments.

Goods purchases are protected by PayPal's buyer guarantee/insurance type thing. That's why most shoutout sellers request Friends and Family payments from their customers, so that they are protected from these types of situations.

It's hard to recommend any "official" channels because it's even against Instagram's ToS to "sell" posts.

So just request FandF posts from now on.

So if they use Friends and Family to pay they can't request a refund?

Use F&F but a lot of them won’t pay via F&F only goods and services. But that’s not a problem at all. Make screenshots of conversations and keep them just in case! If a dispute happens just provide them with full proof of all conversations and you’re good! Nothing to worry about...
 
One of Paypal's amendments to their terms of service indicates digital goods are not covered under Seller Protection. It sucks, but it doesn't always mean you don't have a chance to win a dispute if you present certain evidences. Perhaps you can have a no refund policy on your site or make your terms clear to your customers.

You first need to understand the difference between State and Country.

Yes, there are companies that can open an LLC for a foreigner remotely (not this one), but to open a bank account your physical presence is required.

You people from the US think that everything is so simple to be done (it is for you), but not for the rest of us.
 
i'm shocked to read paypal now support digital purchases, back `in the day` services like yours were totally unprotected
