Shopify free vs Paid themes, how much difference in conversions?

I've noticed that the free shopify themes such as "supplier" can look pretty decent if you have a good logo, banner design and tweak the colors. They are simple enough and for niche/small stores that simplicity is needed to focus the customer solely on the products and clicking on the cart etc.

I have no problems buying a paid theme but I wanted to know if the free themes could convert good for starters if we focus on the Ad campaign instead or if a paid theme really made a huge difference.

What are your thoughts?

There are alot of people who rush into making stores with shopify without thinking too deep into what they are getting into and they normally use the free shopify themes. When they don't ship their item out on time or give good customers service the customers will remember the feel of a website that gives them a bad experience. If your website feels and looks similar to one that gave them a bad experience they will not shop with you.

There are some paid shopify themes going for free somewhere on this fourm I think. Might be worth a look.
 
Premium themes going for free on this or any other forums will be the worst to start with!
These are the themes used by the guys who won't ship the item/give good customer service. "Once a Thief, Always a Thief"
I would suggest you to either buy a less known/used premium theme (it must not be promoted by a Shopify Guru) or go with some free theme not available on the Shopify store.
 
Also beware, I think someone got banned by Shopify by 'using' a product that wasn't paid for.

As I said I don't mind buying a nice looking paid theme but a lot of beginners tend to buy all these themes and apps and forget to focus on advertising and targeting.

Should you use a simple theme that is straight to the point or a "complex theme" that gives authority?

Users want to feel fimiliar with the website, look at a few big websites and you will see similarities. That's what you should be heading for. It depends what you mean with simple and complex. Some paid themes include apps that people argue make's the business feel more like a bricks and water store.
 
Don't expect any significant boost with paid Shopify themes. If you're trying to create a great looking website, go with Squarespace (I'm in no way affiliated with them).

What's your niche? Is it a theme that displays all the products or is it a stylized-homepage theme?

In any case, I got myself a paid theme now and things are going nice and slow.
 
It depends,in the long run of course paid ones are better.But some people make 50k or 100k sales on Brooklyn so you know...It is not all about theme,but to be more specific,yes paid is better,but people do make sales on free and then get paid one.If you dont get sales on free I doubt you will get with paid ones.
