seocrab's AdSense journey to $500/month

UPDATE!

Didn't expect there to be so many eager followers (thanks, guys!) so here's what's been happening in the last 3 weeks.

- 3 more sites set up, content added etc just like the first one. 2 of these sites were aged domains from GoDaddy auctions so it took 10 days for them to get transferred to me (annoying but worth it).

- Google Webmaster Tools and Analytics added to all sites (may as well use them as Google will be tracking the sites through AdSense anyway).
AdSense has NOT been added yet.

Let's crack on with the backlinking. I estimate 1-2 weeks of strong backlink building before adding AdSense. The reason for this is I want to get some decent traffic and Page 1 rankings before applying. I have an account from some old projects a few years ago, but this one will be completely new, from a fresh Google account, so I want to make a strong application to get accepted straight away.

Backlink Building

Firstly, I'm interlinking all my sites together. Risky, you say? Well, actually, these sites will soon be linked via AdSense ID and Google will know they are owned by the same person so there's no footprint to bother hiding.

My sites are PR3, PR3, PR3 and PR4, each with around 10 pages. I added sitewide links to all pages, with branded anchors (not exact match keywords), giving each site a health 30+ decent links from the get-go. Since I already bought these sites for the AdSense project, the cost is $0.

Next step, video marketing. I scraped a couple of decent videos from YT, edited them to make them unique and uploaded to YT and Vimeo. This was done for each site, on each site page (20 videos in total). Again, cost is $0 except for the time. Some videos have been embedded too, for extra on-page diversity.

That's it for the first batch of links. More will be coming over the next 2 weeks. After reading the AdSense terms (and Webmaster Guidelines) thoroughly I'm staying away from any paid links (like blog networks) as, potentially, they could get my sites flagged and, worst case scenario, banned from AdSense.

But that doesn't mean this will be a 100% whitehat journey however! I will be building a private mini-niche network for each site, plus some high PR blog comments to get things moving. As always, I'll provide a tutorial on everything I do for this journey.

I'll try and answer as many questions as possible. :)

YESSSS so glad that this journey isn't over! I was waiting!:)

What software are you using to scrape YT videos and edit them? Thanks!

Great thread seocrab... I started my journey with you... this is my first project so i dont have much to invest, can you tell me how much profit a small micro niche website with those low keywords stats can make? many thanks...

No software to scrape the videos, since it's only a small volume I watch a couple, then download them with a Firefox plugin. Editing is done in good ole Windows Movie Maker.

Who knows - how long is a piece of string? I'll report my figures when they start rolling in.

Thanks for the update! Glad to see this journey is on the move.
Would you mind explaining your interlinking and onsite strategy/structure a bit further?
How exactly do you end up with 30+ inbound(?) links to each site, between 4 sites?

Subscribed SC.
Good luck for your journey.
I just want to see whether adsense accepts you at such a early stage,i mean here it's like your domain should be 6 months old or should have very high traffic.
Wishing You success, keep us updated :D

Sub!!..what a journey with spoon feed tutorial...thanks man! and good luck...cheers

seocrab sorry for asking, but i am confused... you said for we choose 5 small keywords... what is the keyword for the homepage? i already have one page with my main keyword, and 4 others with my other keywords, and yoast seo says that i shouldnt have 2 pages with the same keyword... thanks...

thanks for the seo quake :)

question : why did you choose a keyword with high competition??? "custom cycling jerseys???

High competition means that, there are money companies paying for adwords, which mean there is a lot of money for you, to earn with adsense. :)

It does not mean it's hard to rank.

Sure; 4 sites, each with 10 pages = 40 pages. One footer link on each external site = 30 links. It's the homepage link (with PR) that carries the most weight.

My homepages are generic, about the general niche but not targetting any keywords in particular. They have a lot of long tail variation, but it's all natural. It's the inner pages that are keyword-focused.

thanks for the seo quake :)

Exactly what SimonRohde said above - high competition means lots of advertisers. However, I did not go with the cycling jersey keyword if you read carefully, I chose a less popular (and easier to rank) longtail version.

So, for example, if my main keyword is "bicycle jerseys" with something like 4000 searchs per month then I'll have 4 others sub-keywords such as "create bicycle jersey" or "choose bicycle jersey" and each of those sub-keywords will have less than 1000 searchs per month?

Your threads are quite informative seocrab, I look forward to your next significant post.
